25 ACT, retaking on December but assuming it will not improve by much (haven’t studied but will prob 2 weeks before)
Decent amount of clubs, nothing too big just volunteered and participated in math club Spanish club etc
Both my test score and GPA is decently below average
The big “hook” of my application, however, is my big improvement from a 2.5 GPA (3 Cs 3 Bs) to a much higher GPA. I started off taking easy classes and was doing bad at them, but then started trying.
This is what my entire essay prompt revolved around (my huge improvement in grades)
Took 4 AP classes junior and 6 this year (8 if you count Physics C and us and comp gov)
Honestly, I want to keep my hopes up but I do not think I’m getting in. I feel like my GPA being below average is off the hook as I talked all about it, but my test score is way too low compared to Michigan’s average, and I don’t think it will be improving by much to make a difference.
Deciding between a math/science major which I talked about in my essays
I’m European (not a first gen student tho)
Also, one thing I don’t think is too important but may be is that I sent 5 AP scores and got 3 2s (reasons being I wasn’t prepped well by the teachers and I’m not the best test-taker) but I got As on all those classes
Having low grades that you improve on is not considered a hook. What is your unweighted GPA? OOS acceptance is to UMich is very competitive (~18% acceptance) and international may be even more competitive. I would say your chances are very low.
Also don’t send official AP scores to schools until you have been accepted there. Sending low score can in no way help you and most school don require you to send official scores for admission and it is usually optional that you self report.
sorry but I don’t think UMich is in the cards for you. Feel free to apply but don’t get your hopes up and don’t ignore other applications. The good news is that there are many similar and excellent schools- Indiana, U of Minnesota being just 2 examples.
For the Class of 2023, the average uwGPA was 3.9 with the median ACT score of 32-35. And the stats of UMich’s instate applicants will skew on the lower side than that of OOS applicants.
Unfortunately, I have to agree with JoeCollege above.
I didn’t know, so I kept my response non-specific to your situation.
I tabulated much of the results from the UMich RD process here on this site, which included deferred EA applicants. The two INSTATE and ACCEPTED examples from the Class of 2023 pulled from this site, which admittedly, the students/parents of students here probably skew higher than the entire UMich applicant pool:
Example 1: LSA with an uwGPA 3.9 and ACT score of 28.
Example 2: LSA with an uwGPA 3.7 and ACT score of 32.
These 2 examples were the lowest uwGPA and lowest ACT score posted here on this site for accepted instate applicants. Again, the caveats are this site provides just a tiny sample size of the 15,000 accepted students and 65,000 applications and a sample size that includes students and parents of students with stats that skew high. Also, we don’t see the entire application with essays and EC’s.
I like your attitude and maybe Michigan will too, if you can manage to show it through essays and letters.
IMO, the nice thing about big schools like UM is that they aren’t that unique. What really makes UM different than other big D1 schools is it’s academic prestige. But really there are so many similar schools that are a notch easier to get in: Ohio State, Pitt…
If you scored all "A"s on the AP classes, get a 33 on the ACT then you have a shot. But you state many things that give me pause like your teachers didn’t prep you well but you only gave yourself 2 weeks to improve your current act and your a procrastinator.
These will not lead to success at Michigan. It’s an extremely hard /challenging school. Lots of students drop a full grade the first semester /year.
Saying that. Apply and consider it a reach school. Have other schools that you might be a better fit for also. Good luck!
