Hey All,

I'v been interning at a local tv station for 2 years now
Am in Student Government, Leadership (Commissioner of Technology)
Director of Student News Show
Volunteered a LOT (have like 1000 hours in the last couple years)
SAT score is about a 1400
First Place PSA Award in State Wide Contest

I'm at one of the highest ranking API score schools in the country in Los Angeles.
I know im obviously not a FANTASTIC student, but I try hard, and I think my effort goes noticed.
What do you think?
USC material? Cal State Long Beach Material? Junior College?
Whatever school I get in I want to try to get in the cinematic arts program, USC is my #1
Thanks!

Oh and I haven't taken any honors or ap's :/
But I think i might take computer science ap next year

hmm yeah grades-wise USC and the higher level UCs are reaches for ya but you have some good ECs and your good grades in video classes emphasizes your cinematic arts commitment. I think you are in for CSUs! Terrific essays/recs might also help even out your grades.

I recommend you take some harder classes (if possible) and take the SAT again either in the summer or fall of senior year and score 1800+ to get into the USC/UC middle 50 percent! Good luck!

yeah, i'm trying to take some ap's. oh well, csu's are ok( im still shooting for a uc). thanks!

i think ur in

agreed that USC and higher level UC's may be reaches- but you have good EC's. have you thought about UCI or UCR? i can see you in at those. good luck!

could you chance me back?

if you had some ap's going for you then your grades might work but otherwise... i think the uc's besides merced and riverside as well as usc are reaches. really push it on those essays.

Thanks Everyone for your responses so far.
I don't know if it counts, but I forgot to mention a couple things.
I took a year long work experience/internship class sophomore year
My dad went to USC
Was on Principals Honor Roll last year

Get your grades up next semester, and if you feel the knowledge you gain in the classes from that would make your SAT scores better, then retake those (IF you feel there would be a significant improvement). You're still a junior, so it's not too late to move up the ladder from where you would be if applying today.

If you really want to go to a "better" college (though really that's subjective), work for it in your academics.

Brace yourself, USC is out of the question. Your Dad is a USC grad, and that is not even going to play a factor due to your course selection, and overall achievment to date. Study skills? That is considered a joke in the world of college admissions. If there are some academic development issues....I apologize. You can't expect to gain admission to UCLA/UCB or USC with the approach that you have taken. Maybe you should have interned less, and focused more time on your academic studies. You attend one of the better schools in Los Angeles, then you need to take advantage of the opportunities that are presented to you. Your interest in media is stellar: internship, activities at the school site....but, it takes more than that to gain admission to top schools. on the positive side, you're definately in cal state long beach, los angeles, san b, fullerton, and possibly san diego state university. Good luck!

^Agreed. That 1400 is out a 2400 isn't it? Try to bump that up...
Like really BUMP up that score...to at least a 2100..
As of right now USC is a fairly large reach, because your grades are less than stellar and your SAT is horrid.

^Thanks for being honest
Do you think it would be easier to go to a community college and TRY to switch to USC junior year, or go to a CSU and switch from there?

^Haha man, just relax. You're a junior. I mean, you may just get into USC. Who knows? Just do what you can to get some higher test scores to bolster your gpa and try your best to get all As for semester 2 and semester 1 of your junior year. Good luck!

Aight, thanks!

There is an avenue to gain admission into USC, you can try the CC route or attend a Cal State and transfer. It depends on what type of experience you want freshman year. You might attend a Cal State and fall in love with the environment, and, say, USC, who? As long as you obtain new skills that enhance your abilities, then it does not matter too much. You seem to be very focused in the media industry, continue to learn your craft and things will fall in place for you. Keep your head up, and USC is not the only university in the world. Have you considered LMU, Capital University, Catholic University in Washington, DC, and Hampton University?

Try the ACT, you might have a different outcome....it is very hard to go from a 1400 to 2100 on the SAT, we need to be realistic here.

LMU yes, all the others no. I think staying in the L.A. or so cal area would be best, especially for film
