EC's:

My major EC is a program called Amigos de las Americas, which I did in junior year. Basically our group funraised money so we could do community service work in Latin America/ South America. Individually, I fundraised about 3,000 dollars. I went to Masaya, Nicaragua for two months and taught about health and stuff at an elementary school and an orphanage, while staying with a very poor family in Pacaya. Something i'll probably remember for the rest of my life, and its the topic of my main essay (though I try to talk about interpersonal struggle w/ my partner and not the whole trip)

now for the more typical ECs...
Piano- played since I was four, i'm sending in a recording to schools that allow it
Orchestra- I play timpani/percussion, and i'm the lead percussionist. will continue in college as a minor. I went on two tours in LA with my orchestra
Varsity Track- three years
Varsity XC- three years, one year of JV
Martial Arts- eight years
Architecture- i've built some major models in my class, and this might be my major in college. Right now i'm building a skyscraper model with three other students.
Rebuilding Together- did some metal working for a preschool in Hunter's Point for one year
Habitat for Humanity- did about 25 hours of work in a week

I have my essays, but I won't burden anyone with reading them... :)

I'm also a minority (Middle Eastern Muslim) and I do need financial aid (though not expecting it for UCs).

SO here are the colleges i'm looking at

Macalester/Colby/USC/Tulane i'm all expecting to be a match or safety

I live in California, so i'm applying to these UCs:
Berkeley, Davis, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, San Diego, LA

And.. now the schools i'm not sure about:
University of Michigan
University of Virginia (no one has ever applied here from my school...)
Georgetown (top choice, but I know its a reach)
Oberlin

Many thanks! and ... be nice?

University of Virgina and Georgetown, sadly, are both reaches.
Oberlin and University of Michigan are both Possible/Likely.

Good luck with the college process. :) I hope you get in where you will be happy.

oh if anyone can answer this, how important is applying early for U of Michigan since its rolling?

bumpity bump bump bump

No clue, but good luck with your admissions! You will probably get into your top choice if you go to a competitive private school with that GPA.

SeanMcG:

UCB/UCLA: Slight Reach
UCSD: Match
UCD/UCSB: Safe Match
UCSC: Safety

A 2010 SAT and a 3.6 GPA OOS will make Michigan a Slight Reach. Applying as early as possible is definitely a must. With stats like yours, applying ealy is beneficial. I think you have a high probability of being deferred by Michigan, and then being either accepted or rejected.

Well, I think that your statistics are fine. Your ECs are good, your grades are good, and scoring consistently in the high 600's is good. Your list is good. I question your reaches though. If you need aid, not sure that applying out of state to UVA and UMich is the way to go. You might be better off looking for private school reaches that are known to give aid. Oberlin sounded like a good reach for you. U of Rochester and Rice University might be good reaches as well, and they give good aid to a lot of people.

my parents seem to think UVA will be cheaper and so will U of Mich, possibly because of our assets we wouldnt get much aid from a private school, and those schools have cheaper tuition

How does U of Mich's rolling admission work? If I don't meet their standards, are you defered or rejected?

I was thinking about Rice but I thought that would be a bigger reach than Georgetown...

bump, would like one more opinion on the UCs

oh and i'm applying to Rice, Northwestern and Puget Sound now since they accept common app
