Chance JHU Appalachian Guy

What do you all think my chance for admittance to Johns Hopkins is? NOBODY from my area (Eastern Kentucky) even applies. If any even go to college, it's to the small CC in town. A little about me: My dad died when I was three and I was reared in Eastern Kentucky by a single mom.

Hah, I guess you could say I'm poor? My EFC on the FAFSA will probably be 0. Mom took a few classes through U of Phoenix and hers was 0.

SAT I: N/A

SAT II: U.S. History: 650 World History: 770

ACT w/ Writing: 31

Unweighted GPA: 4.0 (School does not calculate a weighted GPA, If they did it would be higher.)

Class Rank: 1 of 195

AP's: US H: 3 Euro H:3 World H: 5 (I never took any AP classes; none were offered. I just decided to sign up for the tests lol.)

Senior Course Load: Tough (Dual-Credit English and Pre-Cal, Calc, Geography, Physics, AP Enviro Sci, Adv Topics in Math, Biology II). Took EVERY hard course offered.

Awards: Quest Bridge Ntl College Match Finalist, WYMT Mountain Student Achiever, Graduation Marshall, Voted Smartest in Class 4 years straight, Who's Who in Band and Honor Roll

Extracuriculars: I worked for the majority of this year at the local supermarket to help pay for food (I'm not kidding lol.) Before that I was in band as a section leader and now I'm on the academic team. Nothing stellar like 1st chair state, but always busy with EC's.

Vol: Little Side Projects, Church Work

Summer Activities: Local College Camp Program

Essays: I thought they were pretty good.

Recommendations: Superb (Best kid they've ever seen)

Interview: None so far

State: I live in Virginia, go to school in Eastern Kentucky (think hatfield and mccoy fued :P)
School: Public
Race: White
Hooks: 1st Generation to actual college campus, nobody in this area EVER applies to Ivy.

Strengths: Location, Appalachian (?), Poor?
Weaknesses: No giant list of Vol's or EC's

Thank you very much for your help! Ask anything you need!

to be honest a very very high possibility you have an amazing story behind your life and JHU is much more holistic than other universities…the one thing going against is low ACT but who knows maybe demographics will help you in that case.

I wouldn’t worry if I were you. You have a solid chance of going to JHU given your background. Write good essays and infuse your personal voice: you will be fine!

Not to be offensive, but I wouldn’t want being poor to be one of my strengths, haha.

Anyways, you sound like a wonderful person. But seriously, take chance threads with like… a sodium ion. I would say the strongest part of your applcation is achieving the valedictorian position at school while trying very hard to put food on the table. You’ve gotta really work HARD on that essay. Your scores are basically in the zone and your grades are excellent. I say that a compelling essay will land you that big “Yes” envelope in April.

As everyone on that thread already responded to you, you have great strengths. Work on the essay and wait for those acceptance letters.

Thanks all!

Good luck - work on your essays - JHU is an incredibly hard applicant pool. Don’t rely on geographic diversity to get you an offer - your application has to be great.

I imagine that places like Hopkins (& similar schools) get more than enough applicants from places like Kentucky to pick the very best. Let us know how it all turns out and good luck.

25% chance.

Hey thanks lol.
What do you think would be more of a match (besides UVA) for me?

Boston College? University of Miami? NYU? Wake Forest? I’m not sure because some schools pay attention to your EFC so if it’s 0, some schools may say no if they aren’t need blind. Places like Hopkins and company are need blind so they won’t see your EFC.

Maybe there are schools that offer serious merit money for your scores? GW, NYU, Boston University, UMiami and perhaps Boston College or Wake Forest come to mind!
