chance back?

You have lots of good aspects to your profile…1st gen is great, working w/ mentor a real plus, the lab work is fabulous

my thoughts: the collleges themselves are so vastly different. Be sure to study those college books and talk to lots of folks. i.e. Wm & mary: very conservative, NYU liberal. ( can tell ur a new yorker) SUNY Purchase: very artsy. UChic: intellectual. GW: lots of poly sci and gov. Consider Brown or Bard Dartmouth: very snowy and rural

You’re an unusual candidate due to the disparity in your gpa and SAT scores. You should certainly apply to the schools you like and see what happens.

You are definitely in at SUNY Purchase, SUNY New Paltz and CUNY Hunter.

You say you go to a competitive NYC high school. Naturally I don’t know which one, but I suspect you’re better off than you think you are. Not all Bs are created equal. There is a world of difference between a B average at a high school like TJHSST and Stuyvesant and a B average at an average town high school that takes every resident. Your SAT scores will probably help you. Colleges tend to use SAT scores to raise flags. A low SAT score with a high GPA will raise red flags about the school’s difficulty, while a high SAT score with a relatively low GPA will indicate an extenuating circumstance like yours, unusual difficulty of the high school, or laziness. Since you go to a competitive school and you’re explaining the circumstances, I think you’ll be fine.

It’s impossible to chance those schools, IMO, because each school will look at your circumstances differently. NYU may look at your freshman grades and throw your app. out while Dartmouth may look at the difficulties you overcame and put your app on a plaque. You will get into atleast one top school. Your SAT’s are AWESOME, so don’t worry at all. You’ll do well. Hope this helps!
