Chance me ... and give me advice! (Class of 2020)

This will be very quick and easy:

UW GPA: 3.60
W GPA: 5.0

Rank: Top 4%

SAT 1: 2230

SAT 2: 720 US History, 710 Bio E

Courses: Most difficult, as many AP courses possible.

EC:

Debate Team : Won lots and lots of national awards.

Geography: I helped re-write the curriculum for my High School Geography Class.
Essentially, I made it more progressive by allowing academic flexibility in that students
choose what they want to study and when they want to study it. It’s a very big hit!

Radio: Host of a local radio show, and I do podcasts. I also participate in my high school’s film team, where I do
the set up for the morning announcements. My radio show is about design! My podcast show is about technology, mainly my opinions on the future of technology. I get a few hundred views on each one every month.

Projects I worked on:

I redesigned my school’s website. It went from being blocky and text-filled, to having mainly pictures and animations.
I also created a admissions advice page on the website, where there are ‘admission tips’ from students of the same high school who got into prestigious universities.

I also designed a website for a Professor who works at Brown. The professor is doing research in the summer, and needed a website to attract volunteers.

I am also currently designing an iPhone app. Hoping I qualify for a Design Scholarship Award by Apple this summer. We’ll see soon.

P.S. I want to apply for the RISD/Brown Dual Degree Program. But I am aware of the insane competition in that program, and am totally fine with just attending Brown, and also taking courses at RISD.

Obviously, a concern would be my low GPA. This is because both my parents recently got divorced, and so I live with my mother. She is currently in school, so our salary is virtually nothing and I have to take care of my little sister every single day! Also, my low GPA is because I am absent quite frequently. Around 20 days every school year. But this is because of Debate! So far, I’ve traveled to nearly 10 states and each trip is around 6 days long. This becomes a challenge, as we often have tests on the day we get back to school. And as you can tell by my class rank, there is a lot of grade deflation. But in terms of grades, I’ve gotten all As and Bs, except for one C in one semester in PreCalc. And frankly, that C was generous.

Anyways, I really want to do design, but also CS. I know there are no definitive answers, so any advice for my application would be lovely! Thanks!

P.P.S. If it matters, I am an Chinese girl from North Florida.
