Teacher Recommendation: One of the most pleasant students to have ever taught (multiple replies)

Without knowing the SAT, it’s tough to say. The GPA however is well below the average. You have good extracurriculars but those will only be helpful if you can get past the initial number cutoffs. Write some good essays and prepare for the SAT a lot. Good luck!

I think that with proper SAT score you could aim even higher cause you have good EC’s… your GPA is the only issue… but there is an upward trend which is great! You have a great chance at Davis (I think)

With a PSAT of 215 as an indicator, plus some SAT study, along with your good writing style as I can judge from your original post, I would expect you to do very well on the SAT — perhaps 2100+ . Your GPA is somewhat low for Davis, but with a high SAT you will have a good chance. What will make the difference is COSMOS!

I went to COSMOS (at UC Irvine) after my junior year and I can report that everyone (including me) who went to COSMOS had excellent admission results at all the UC’s. In addition, with my very good (but not great) SAT/GPA, all my friends and I were amazed at how I got into every UC I applied to (SB, SD, and Davis). Many of my friends with higher stats were rejected. There is no doubt in my mind that COSMOS on my application made the difference.

I think all the UC adcoms compete for the COSMOS participants. One of COSMOS’s stated goals is to keep top STEM students from leaving the state. Heck, UC runs the program! There may be more prestigious programs than COSMOS in the eyes of private university adcoms nationwide, but COSMOS is a great program and a real eye-catcher for the UC application readers. There’s even a separate check-box on the application for COSMOS.
