From my experience anything about about 75% on parchment and your likely to get in. 65/70 would mean it could go either way.
if it makes you feel better I only have a 44% chance of getting to Virginia Tech on Parchment.
Can you get deferred from early action? I know you could get deferred from early decision but how about early action? Regular decisions only come out couple of weeks after early action.
You can get deferred from Early Action to regular decision
@cbl1 This would actually surprise me if it happens more than a very rare occasion, though. After all, the 2 decision dates are only 2 weeks apart. Does it really happen that often?
Any chance EA decisions come out before Feb 22th
@HokieCrazy Rare probably, but no one can guess how often since this is only the 2nd year that EA has existed. @dhaatx Based on prior years, VTās advertised decision dates have matched very closely with actual release dates. Follow admissions on social media and youāll get notice of any change. The 22nd is a Saturday - I could see them possibly releasing after 5:00 PM onthe 21st.
Now his portal is doing that as well. It didnāt until today.
I hope they get decisions out earlier this year for early action. Since new process I know they want to give themselves time ā¦ but hopefully this year they have stream lined it more. You would assume they would want to widen the gap between early action and regular decision where the early action came out sometime by end of January each year.
It would be hepful if it was moved up, but my guess is they are still at least a year away from changing the schedule - last year was the test run, this year is de-bugging, next year settling in to consistency. A lot depends on where on the calendar most of the EA apps have been submitted and if shortening the back end allows sufficient time for review.
I was happy to see they removed the need to re-input all your high school classes this year and instead were able to pull it from the coallition app.
Just got some stats from my sonās high school (in NOVA) as follows:
Students accepted by VT for Early Decision: WGPA 4.05 / SAT 1275
My sonās stats: WGPA 3.88 / SAT 1370 / 8 APs, 6 Honors and 2 DEs classes
How about his chance for EA (Biology major)?
By the way, he was just accepted to Pitt (average GPA 4.08 / SAT 1355 which is higher than VTās average).
His stats are very similar to mine and they said that I have a pretty good chance of getting into engineering. Looks pretty good to me.
My apprehension would be the Biology Major - they overaccepted last year so there is worry they will compensate some this year and what that will mean.
Best of luck you certainly have a good chance.
What do you guys think are the most important holistic factors of an applicant? By this I mean what holistic factor would contribute the most towards an application.
- good essay
- challenging classes
- good extra curricular including leadership positions
- First generation college student
- Minority classification
- socio-economic background
- legacy
- some have said demonstrated interest (like college visit) but I have seen admissions say that is not looked at. If anything they do look at "Likelyhood of Enrollment" in their process whether it be for admissions itself or for data points to determine likely acceptance rates.
@cbl1 This would actually surprise me if it happens more than a very rare occasion, though. After all, the 2 decision dates are only 2 weeks apart. Does it really happen that often?
First Generation college studentā¦and legacy. LOL
Yes Iām sure they actually do look at all of these things. At the question and answer before our last tour they mentioned how all the essays are sent out and graded. There have also been numerous articles where Virginia colleges have specific goals in recruiting underrepresented populations. So they are and must look at these factors.
How much they contribute to the total āScoreā in determining admission is unknown. I do believe first gen and underrepresented do more for you than legacy. Whether legacy matters more than a bad essay - no idea!
Iām also fairly certain if you hit a certain GPA and SAT threshold you probably get into the accepted pile without a holistic review.
I would probably guess that the top 60% of the class gets in on test scores and gpa alone. The rest have to be further evaluated in the holistic review.
Yea I still donāt understand the short window between 2 decision periods. It doesnāt make sense that they arenāt already done with the early actions and weāll into working on the regular admission by time they release early action decisions. Thatās why I say they need to work to get early action to a Jan 31 release at least.
If you have a bunch to holistic review defer them to regular and get on with it.
Assuming you are looking at and commenting on this as an oxymoron? The list of holistic impact wasnāt cumulativeā¦
FWIW, trend seems to be that legacy is carrying less and less weight each year. Unless thereās a serious deficit in extracurriculars, I consider that negligible in terms of holistic review (everyoneās had a job, volunteer hours, varsity athlete or band, NHS, etc,). Wih current trends in higher ed being towards less emphasis on standardized tests (and assuming applicant is within reasonable range of basic historical GPA and SAT parameters):
1.) Strength of VT essay prompts as they relate to HS work or extracurriculars.
1a.) Upgrade if applicant is first gen or underrepresented.
2.) In combination with 1 and 1a, if GPA exceeds historical mean.
3.) In combination with 1, 1a, and 2 if course rigor ranks high.
4.) Standardized tests, only if combo of above are a draw vs. other applicants.
