Thanks for your time!

GPA/rank will qualify you for consideration, SAT I is in the midrange, SAT IIs are weak so far...the common EC thread i see is in student govt/JSA, are you a polisci/intl rel major? that gives you a narrative that adcoms like to see. the science research in interesting, im curious as to how it fits into the narrative as well...make sure to tie it into the essay so that it doesnt appear that you are just "going through the motions" of piecing together an application.

as your stats are nothing extraordinary, it will come down to the narrative you and your teachers are able to convey in essays and recs. pay close attention to the section on the columbia app that regards interests/reading materials. if you dont already, start to participate or at least pay attention to the intellectual dialogue revolving around your field(s) of interest (which you will be writing about in the essay, etc.)

best of luck.

casey's advice is great, the only slight downside i see is in the ecs: nothing is 'yours' you aren't leader, or founder of anything. SAT I is fine, sat IIs are weak. APs are fine. I think you stand a decent shot applying ED, you don't have a good chance, because nothing blows me away, but you are well rounded, and qualified enough to survive here.

"that gives you a narrative that adcoms like to see"

narrative...good word.

Thanks for the advice, both responses are very helpful.

confidentialcoll: In response to EC's, I will be in charge of leading JSA conventions in my area, which basically entails keeping up to 1,500 students organized. However, I definitely understand that besides that, I am not a president/ founder of anything, which doesn't really make me stand out.

Also, on a somewhat unrelated note, the President of the Board of Education of my school has told me she is willing to write me a recommendation, since I have been doing summer research under her guidance. She is a Columbia alumni, so I was thinking that I would have my english teacher, my science research teacher, AND the President of the Board of Ed. (instead of my science research mentor) write my recommendations. Do you think this would be fine, or would it seem like overkill?

Thanks for all the help.

Well if this is running a one time event with 1500 students, it depends on the difficult of organization, frequency of event, your involvement and how those come across in the application. Some events take months to plan, others days. Colleges focus on only the most significant out-of-classroom commitments, which usually entail weekly / daily involvement for years.

Conventions are three times a year, and definitely take up a considerable amount of time (events are overnight, and take months to plan). I have been involved in JSA (on the school level) as well as on the statewide/ national level for all four years, so it is definitely one of my most significant out of school commitments.

U got a good shot like everyone else applying ED with a 2200+ Sat score.

Just right a Great Essay since that could put you over the top and help you gain admission.

Oh, and I forgot to include in my original post that I have been playing flute for the past 10 years, and will be first chair my senior year. (Hopefully making me a well rounded candidate?)
