I think a major issue is money. If you are eligible for financial aid , if your family can afford what the calculators say they should pay and if they are willing.
If you want medical school, you want to protect your GPA in college at all costs…3.7+ range. Be careful about going to a reach school in this scenario or taking on an unnecessarily difficult major that limits you, like biomedical engineering. On a side note, there are way too many biomedical engineering grads compared to the number of jobs that will be available in the next decade. Research employment data in BLS. It’s not exactly the best back up for med school. It’s a narrow field and really requires a grad degree. You may be better off in biochem, chem, biotech, biostatistics, etc. or even just the psych degree. There are several posts on CC about how adcoms at med schools prioritize GPA/MCAT over the prestige of the undergrad institute. I’d recommend going where your stats put you in the top 25th percentile so you can secure a strong GPA, get thru premed requirements, obtain excellent clinical and non clinical volunteer experience, participate in research, etc.
