I will most likely be a National Merit Finalist in the fall

*i know that my EC's are a little weak, but thats b/c im so focused on basketball. my school is really good in bball. this year we had one player going to ASU, another Army, we were in state championship last year, and U of A comes to our open gyms to scout us. unfortunately, im not sure if colleges will know how good my HS team is and i dont think many people know how much a commitment basketball is (countless hours shooting, lifting, conditioning, playing, etc). any ideas on how to improve my EC's? Thanks for your input!

also what scholarship opportunities do i have at princeton with my stats? my parents make about $150K a year so im not expecting too much need based aid :(

Does Princeton have any merit-based aid (I wouldn't know, I'm on fellowship)? I'd be surprised if it did, as most elite private universities do not (though there are exceptions). You seem to have the usual GPA/SAT scores that everyone else gets around here. Who knows?

There is an entire other subforum here called College Chances or something like that. Maybe you should give that a try.

Princeton does NOT give merit aid. The Ivies and some other top colleges only offer financial aid.

Yeah, I suspected as much. My undergraduate institution (Notre Dame) didn't either.

OP, this may seem obvious, but you might want to look into local/national scholarships around your area that are offered. You certainly seem to have the stats to earn some money through this route.

my parents make about $150K a year. will i recieve any financial aid or will i be paying about the whole cost for princeton? also my brother is a year younger than me and does that increase my financial aid b/c we'll soon both in college at the same time?

https://sweb.princeton.edu/cgi-bin/FinAid/finaid_form.pl

You're welcome.

haha well i got a big zero for my financial aid estimate. does this means i would have to pay $50K a year to go to Princeton?

I guess that's what it sounds like unfortunately. I mean, any private school of that caliber is going to have a hefty price tag.

I don't think that is right...
My parents make 150k a year and I only have to pay around 12k a year.
My parents also took everything out of investments and put it into retirement which isn't considered for aid though.

Good chances. I know this sounds cliche, but try to be unique. You have the stats (just take some more SAT II's) now you look unique in the fact that you like sports a lot and you're not just another "textureless math grind". (Not saying I agree with the use of the quote-I don't-but lets not be naive and pretend the adcom's don't think a good portion of Asian males are like that) Try to write about sports in your essay and hope you get in.

Oh yeah, you arent getting any scholarships...lol.

I'm with 1MX...I'm getting need-based financial aid for a similar salary. Are you sure you filled out everything on the Princeton calculator correctly?

blah, sorry, i don't feel like filling out that form at bezel's link..

can anyone tell me the max. income with which you still get need-based aid?

at Pton you will probably get some aid and almost definitely be offered work-study, which makes it really easy to get a job [Pton jobs start at around 9.70 but it's easy to make around 11 per hour]. It's not all about income -- assets, stocks, property, savings, etc. all factor highly into how much you will receive. My family makes about $80,000 but we have no assets or savings and I get about 39,000 a year.
