I am a University of Illinois student looking to transfer to UCLA or NYU. My major is Economics.
my stats are:

3.59 college gpa
Volunteered with children with brain injuries
Volunteered in India
Study Abroad in London at Univeristy College of London
Muslim Student Assosciation
College Democrats
Film Club
Economics Club

Excellent recommendations and pretty good essays if i do say so myself ;)

I also have a unique story, where I was hospitalized the second semester of my freshman year in college, and I came back to school and got better grades and worked harder in extracurricular activites and so forth. So what are my chances.

What’s the semester-to-semester breakdown of your GPA?

Sorry to say but chances are pretty low at UCLA. That’s only because out of state transfers have a really low priority in transferring, especially in a highly selective major like Economics (ex. Biz Econ admit 3.83 avg). This shouldn’t stop you from still applying.

But I think you might have a shot at NYU since they are a private school that doesn’t probably give preference to what state you reside.

^ exactly what I was going to say. UCLA is a longshot, but NYU might still be in the works if you have a strong enough upward trend.

I would have to agree with the previous posts. All of the UCs and few other large, public state schools can be harder to get into for out-of-state students than other ultra-competitive and even ivy league schools such as Cornell University, University of Pennsylvania, Vanderbilt, Emory, and Washington University. Also, UCLA does not have a solid business program so I would recommmend NYU Stern over UCLA to be honest.

You should look into other schools too, UChicago has an amazing Economics department and it might help being a resident of Illinois for you.
