You sound like a good candidate, but you really need a higher ACT than that… aim for 31-ish at least. Chicago superscores, so if you just concentrate on the areas you didn’t do well on, you could really boost that.

Yes, raise the ACT or take the SAT. You will also need to write really good essays on weird topics. Your EC’s seems to be impressive with winning all those competetions, but I don’t know much about that. I like the adjectives you choose to describe yourself - the type of qualities asian philisophy teaches.

The U of C is also my first choice. Your competitions seem very impressive and would likely help you a lot seeing as they are in areas related to your desired field. Chicago is looking for a certain kind of personality, a sort of intellectual type. I guess you really need to express this in your essay, which is the strategy I’m taking. Of course, if you don’t get in, there is a number of great schools you could study at for your interests. If all turns out well for both of us, we could be classmates soon!

I graduated from UofChicago in 2005. With your academic profile, you have a good shot at Chicago. However, you will need to crank out a top notch essay and solid recommendations that support your strong academic and extracurricular profile. Don’t worry too much about your ACT score. Chicago tends to focus on these less than other top 10 schools. It’s all about showing admissions staff that you are a good fit for the school’s quirky, cold, and rigorous educational environment. Have you visited the school yet?

no with a 29 ACT you shouldn’t even apply. Look at the other kid he has a 2360…
