Chance me at Wake Forest?

Hey all,
I was just wondering if you could give me some insight on what my chances of admission are at Wake Forest

Background: Caucasian male from West Virginia. I’m not sure if this is true, but I’ve heard being from West Virginia could be provide somewhat of a boost for my admissions chances. Any truth to this? Also had a very solid interview, good letters of recommendation, one from a former Wake Forest student.

GPA Weighted: 4,4
GPA Unweighted: 3.81

  • One thing that really worries me is that I got 6 B’s Junior year (3 first semester, 3 second, 2 were B +s) while only one my freshman year and one B+ my sophmore year. Is this likely to really hurt my chances? Granted, I was taking the hardest classes offered. Any insight on this especially would be very much appreciated!
  • Lots of APs including World History, Biology, Micro and Macro Economics, US History, and English Writing and Composition with 4s on all except Micro Economics (2) and English (5)
  • This year enrolled in AP Physics C Mechanics, Comp Sci, English Lit, and Calculus AB
  • Almost all honors classes throughout High School with the exception of classes like theology (Catholic school) and PE

ACT Composite: 32
English: 36
Reading: 36
Math: 29
Science: 28

SAT: 1400
Math: 700
Reading: 700

Took SAT subject tests in Bio M, Math 2, and Literature, scores weren’t great, not submitting.

EC (What I’m most worried about)

  • 4 years varsity swimming (Current Team Captain)
  • 4 years counselor at a local Church Camp
  • 4 Years of Guitar Lessons
  • 10 years of piano lessons including performances
  • 3 years lifeguarding (Head Life Guard this past summer)
  • 1 Year of Debate Team
  • 4 Years of Junior Classical League (Latin Club), Co-president this year
  • 6 Years Ski Club
  • 3 Years Peer Tutoring
  • National Merit Semi Finalist
  • AP Scholar with distinction
  • National Latin Exam Award (3 Years)

I am currently a regular decision applicant, but am considering switching to Early Decision 2. Do you think this would be a good idea, and is it really necessary? Thanks for any insight!

Also, one thing that I forgot to mention is that there is a very real possibility I will get a C in AP Calc AB. Is this going to be a serious issue regarding my admissions chances? Thanks again

I had an almost identical resume to you save for a 34 on the act rather than a 32, and I got in last year. I actually also got a C in calculus and thought it would be the end of the world, but colleges tend to realize that a single C doesn’t define the student and opt to look at the student as a whole rather than judge the one misstep on your resume.

If you’re not fully confident about the C though, I would advise you to study hard for the AP exam to get a 4 or 5 in order to show admissions that you did in fact manage to understand the material even if you did get a C in the class.

@reh2017, nobody can tell you for sure what your chances are in getting into any school. With that said it appears to me you have taken all the right steps to gain admittance to Wake, but what I think does not really matter. I know that Wake also looks at is class rank and GPA, so do not have a last year slump. I agree with @Harteel69 that one C will not kill you. Good luck and I hope you get a black envelope from Wake.
