Chance me at Yale, Stanford, others. Kthxbye.

I've already posted this, but I've never gotten more than like 3 responses, and this board seems to be hopping lately, so...

My top choice is definitely Yale. I'm also looking at Stanford, UW Madison, Northwestern, Wellesley, and maybe Harvard, I haven't visited there yet so I'm not really sure about the atmosphere. I have a double legacy at Princeton so I'm going to apply there too (mostly 'cuz my parents are really into me going there), but I'm kinda iffy about whether or not that's really waht I want.

GPA UW: 4.0 (not weighted)
Rank: 1/550
SATs: 2280 (720 M, 760 CR, 800 WR).
SATIIs: 780 Spanish, 750 Lit. Unsure of third one to take, prob. US History

Extra-curriculars

Varsity soccer 9-12 (top team in district for 12 years, but have never gotten past first level of State...inner-city school and all can't compete with suburbs in terms of sports)
Club soccer top-level since age 8 (captain)
Newspaper editor 11-12
Volunteer coach of mid-level Spanish-speaking girls' soccer team
Volunteer with literacy program for Spanish-speaking preschoolers (my biggest source volunteer hours...somewhere around 350 for two summers)
Big Sister (Spanish speaking "little sister" o'course)
Accepted as intern at top independent publishing house this summer (as rising senior)
National Honors Society Vice-President
Volunteer for a program that gets teenage mothers involved in poetry/spoken word readings

Awards

National Merit Finalist
Youth journalism award for article, paper I edit
Scholastic Art and Writing Gold Award Short Story (national level)
Applying for Davidson Fellowship (maybe a slim chance, I think?)

My passion (I hope it shows through my extracurriculars) are writing and Spanish (I skipped three years of Spanish: second, fifth, and sixth. I am not a native speaker.) I've been trying to follow them..

Sophomore schedule:
AP English (5)
AP Spanish (4)
AP US History (5)
Honors Chemistry
Honors Algebra II
Spanish IP

Junior Schedule:
College-in-the-schools Economics
Writing class at University of Minnesota
Advanced Spanish Communication at University of Minnesota
Honors Physics
Honors Pre-Calc
Newspaper
Self-study Spanish Lit (plan on 4, 5)

Senior Schedule:
AP Calc AB
AP Environmental Sci
English class at Macalaster (top college in my state w/ Carleton)
Social Studies class at U of M (unsure which)
AP Psych
Spanish class at U of M
Newspaper

The lack of APs junior year was due to the fact that my school only offers limited AP classes. AP Psych will not be offered until next year, and the only AP I didn't take was chemistry (we have just six). Spanish lit was not offered and I studied it all on my own.

For my essays I'm planning on writing about an article I did for my school newspaper junior year about teenage parents at my school, less about the academic journey and more about the personal journey I took bonding with the moms and how it made me more confident as a writer, stuff like that.

Great gpa, great rank, solid test scores, solid ECs. Think about adding a safety to your list. There's always a chance of the worst happening =[

Yale - Reach
Princeton - Reach
Stanford - Reach
UW Madison - Match
Northwestern - High Match
Wellesley - High Match
Harvard - Reach

HYPS is a reach for anyone, but you have solid chances gl in college =D

Your ECs are weak for top schools. Guessing by some of what you say that your HS is not the strongest. I'd ED Princeton as a double legacy for your best shot at a top school.

Thanks for the chances, llpich.

Collegekid--I have just a couple of questions about your post. 1) What, exactly, is weak about my ECs? What else do you think I should have done/should do to pursue my interests? 2) Do you think that colleges will penalize me from having a weak high school? Considering I've taken all the APs I can and have decent test scores, don't you think they'll see there's nothing else I can do about that short of spending 20,000 a year to go to private school (which we can't afford)?

Oh. And I'm not a NM Finalist yet, but I got a 230 on the PSAT, so...?

Tons of kids advance far beyond what their school offers, especially if they have 2 highly educated Princeton grad parents. Great rank in a large class is your only real plus. Your scores are ivy average and EC unexceptional. Just my opinion, but I see your chances as 60% at Princeton and 20% at schools that rate with it.

By advancing far beyond what their school offers, do you mean something like taking 2 college classes junior year and 3 college classes, including one at a top 20 uni, senior year? And self-studying for 2 APs?

Princeton does not offer ED. Also, why are you in an inner city school with Pton parents? (To get the val stat status I'm sure :) :)) Well your SAT is pretty good and your rank is great. Your ECs are not that impressive but they are OK. You will need good essays though to secure admission at the calibre of schools you are applying to. I would add a few schools inbetween HYPS and UW Madison if you wish to go to an elite school. As for Yale, kick butt on the essays and pray to God you get in. Overall though your profile is extremely impressive. Take Collegekid's advice with a grain of salt, you are doing well.

I kind of resent that you would think I was going to an inner-city school just for the rank. My mom used her Princeton education to become a theater director and my dad is a freelance writer. They are by no means wealthy people and we could never afford private school without a scholarship. I also hold strongly to the belief that there are things you learn from an economically and racially diverse school like mine than you do from an all-white private school, boarding school, or suburban school.

Any suggestions to make my ECs more impressive? Thanks for the suggestions. :)

Princeton doesn't have ED.

most of em are what your school is offerring
go search for volunteer places/ more interns/ leadership qualities

You think most of my ECs are what my school is offering? The only school-sponsered ECs I have are school soccer and newspaper! Or were you talking about something else?

Anybody else?

good scores and grades, but i don't see anything that really stands out in clubs and awards. nevertheless, your volunteer service is very unique and impressive.
