Hey everyone! I'm a rising senior in high school and its almost time for me to start applying to colleges. I'm still a bit nervous because I feel I don't have a realistic view as to how I stand regarding certain colleges, particularly American University, George Washington University, and Georgetown University. So what are my chances?

Race: Southern European (Serbian)

Grade: Senior

Rank: 14/60

GPA: 3.4 Unweighted

School/Class Type: Private School

SAT: 1800 (560 M, 630 CR, 610 W)

ACT: N/A

AP: None, school doesn't offer- but I have a full Honors course load

Extra-Curriculars: Varsity Basketball, Model United Nations, Global Issues club, Youth Leadership Club (outside of school)

Honors/Awards: Department Spanish Award, Department Math Award, Honor Roll 3 years straight

Community Service: Lot of hours volunteering as a camp counselor and as an English teacher overseas in Europe.

I also did an internship this summer at the Council on Foreign Relations.

Your scores and GPA are what is holding you back at Georgetown. They only look at the SAT CR+Math, in which case you have an 1190. The bottom of Georgetown’s Middle 50 is 1290, but it is generally considered that a 1400 is where one’s odds start to become good there. Your extracurriculars are fine, and your class rank is all right. Raising your SAT score would be the best way to have better chances. Since you lack any hook, Georgetown is a reach/ high reach.

I’m not entirely sure about the other schools, but you probably have better chances to them.

Yeah, I figured my GPA and SAT are low. But I’m more interested in knowing about my chances for George Washington University, I want to apply Early Decision and the acceptance rate for that is 46%

Georgetown is unrealistic. Your scores, GPA, and class rank are going to hold you back and your extracurriculars aren’t going to offset anything.

GW is a high reach, even with ED because you’re below the 25th percentile of students applying, so you have to write great essays and make sure every other part of your application looks good.

American is a high match because you’re on the lower end for accepted students, but schools like American want students who actually want to go there and aren’t just applying to it as a safety school.
