if anyone knows of any good theatre schools in NY, LA area, or Chicago, it would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone knows a school where acting for film is offered would also be greatly appreciated.

My daughter is getting ready to do this same thing....

Everything we have heard from the various folks in the know is that it is really down to that 5 minutes on the stage. Spend the summer picking your monologues. You will need four.... two classical with one Shakespeare (contrasting) and two contemporary (again, contrasting.) You should also have 16 bars of a song ready, even if you aren't a singer. You may not need that many for each auditions, but you have to have them in your back pocket.

Northwestern does not have auditions. It will be decided on grades, etc. It does not hurt to be a legacy. They emphasize musical theatre, so if you aren't into that, then maybe it isn't the school for you. NYU Tisch, UCLA and USC require auditions. Both UCLA and USC are very much film oriented. Grades matter. But there are more slots. Still, highly competitive and Californians get first shot for UCLA, so this may impact you. In NY, there is also SUNY Purchase. And in California, SF State and Cal State Fullerton are both outstanding (though academically, they won't be as challenging as a UC school.)

Also, check out Emerson in Boston, and Boston University. We think both look quite excellent and Boston is a great town to go to college in. Both require auditions.

North Carolina School of the Arts is supposed to be outstanding. I've heard that Miami is great, but I get the impression you want out.

Also in Chicago, check out Depaul. We have friends who have gone there and love it.
