Hello I am a Chinese student attending UIUC.
I am not a U.S. citizen nor resident.
I want to continue studying mathematics, but I could consider other majors like
applied mathematics and marketing but not statistics.

I am a sophomore currently in junior standing,
with 75 credits in total at the end of this semester.
I'm planning to go back to China and get a rest for an year, doing transfer applications.

Chance me for any prestigious universities above UIUC,
UIUC's math department is quite good, #20 in the U.S. (along with UPenn and Cornell)

estimated GPA at the end of this semester is 3.6 and my SAT from high school is 2200ish.
I took Calc, Abstract Linear Algebra and basic intermediate econ courses,
very basic computer science courses like discrete structures..
currently taking Real analysis and differential equations.

I did two internships for a month or two, all of them are big companies.
Two part time jobs, and passed an actuarial science exam.
Participated in a student organization as a member.. not a big deal I guess.

I'm not applying for financial aids.

Chance me for:

UC Berkeley
IVY level colleges.. Stanford MIT Brown Yale U Chicago Cornell UPenn.. etc
Northwestern

What is your problem with UIUC? Try to get REUs, take graduate courses senior year (if at all possible), get a high score on the math GRE and then you might have a chance to attend any of the colleges you mentioned for grad school.

However, here are the transfers I can tell you straight ahead for:

Thanks for the reply!
I am satisfied with the academic level of U of I. However they do not support the math majors at all.
Excellent professors but the math department and the advisors are not helping.
Any advices with other universities?

Are you sure that that isn’t the case elsewhere?

Don’t just take a year off in order to relax unless you are sure that the situation with the math dept. will be better elsewhere. MIT, Stanford, etc. often have better opportunities, not necessarily better TA’s, etc.

I did not know UPenn and Cornell math was that hard to get in.
They are very prestigious but their math program is about the same with my university.
Guess the quality of the program does not command the entrance rate.
By the way, I’m also considering New York University.
Thanks a lot!

Can you elaborate on your comment that the professors and advisors don’t support you? My son was admitted in math. UIUC has a very high reputation in math. What’s wrong with how the department is running?

I did not say that the professors were not helping. I am very satisfied with UIUC’s academic level. As I already mentioned, the professors here are excellent. They are dedicated and willing to help the students. Indeed, very effective teaching style. I end up admiring every professor at the end of each semester. UIUC’s math logic courses (proof based) are even harder than any top prestigious universities. If you take such courses in U of I and have a decent GPA, then you should be proud of yourself. It is quite easy to take graduate level courses here. I am not sure if it is the same for other universities. However I can ensure you that if your son gets good grades on his 400-level courses, he can get the chance to take graduate level courses.

However, advisors dont know much… do not expect much from them. I think professors can help you more than they do. If you want to know about the courses you want to take, contact the professors. If you are not familiar with the courses, contact the professors. Job or future career related questions? please google them. They do not know. Again, I’m not sure if this is the case for other universities too.

Also, they do not have many TA sessions or help sessions. You basically study on your own with google and the textbook. You can ask the professors, but sometimes it is hard to make it on their office hours and you have to make separate appointments to get your question answered. It would be much easier if they have TA sessions so that I could just go and ask the questions I have. I have seen that this is not the case for the engineering courses… They have TAs for everything.

In my case, I am tired to see new and luxurious engineering buildings and our old rusty math building that smells bad. I am just tired of this place with nothing around but a giant corn field. So do not worry about U of I’s math department. Basically, if you love math, you will love this place and your future is guaranteed (many students, even internationals get high paying jobs). I love math and I could continue studying in this place, but I just want to try something new.
