After just going through the film school route with D23, I would definitely add Ithaca College to the list. Top program and offered the best merit of all the schools D was accepted to. Also, Purchase College. Even for out-of-state students, it’s on the more affordable side. Ithaca does not require a portfolio; Purchase does.
I think you need a safety, both for admissions and for price. CU Denver has a film major.
Film & Television at CU Denver is a hands-on opportunity to write the script, edit the film, operate the camera, and tell the story. Under the guidance of leading industry professionals, students work on a variety of projects, including short films, web series’, documentaries, digital effects, and TV studio production. The cohort model of the program builds strong relationships and allows students to work as a team that emulates real-world film & television production.
Sometimes the best program is right in your own backyard. If you were lucky enough to get the Boettcher or Daniel scholarship, you could use it at CU-Denver. You can also use other scholarships awarded by businesses (like credit unions), civic groups (American Legion, Elks, Rotary), the city (if you live in Denver, there are scholarships that we voted on a few years ago).
I have twin nephews who are starting college in a few months. One is going to Mines because he was able to get enough in aid (also had DU on his final list) and the other to Mesa. I think they each had a budget of $15k and were able to get there by combining local scholarships with school merit aid and other financial aid.
Yes, I did. Thanks so much for catching that! I have edited the original post to fix that.
