Chance Me Cornell College of Human Ecology

Hi everyone!

I plan on applying this fall to Cornell's College of Human Ecology as a Human Development major. I'm hoping to concentrate in Social and Personality Development in preparation to be an elementary school teacher. Chance me please!

GPA: unweighted 3.1 (IK very low..Horrible freshman year, sophomore and junior are better so upward curve.)
ACT: 33 (36 math, 36 english, 27 reading, 33 science; 12 essay) in single sitting
Subject Tests: 700 US history, 750 math 1. 790 math 2
APs: 4 US History, 3 English Literature and Composition
Senior APs: English Language, Calculus AB, Psychology, Art History

Focused extra-curriculars (hundreds of volunteer hours tutoring kids in urban education systems; research with clinical psychologist) as well as a couple unrelated extra-curriculars (acting and writing awards) Great essays and recommendations. I'm also a Black male.

Despite my awful GPA, do you think I have a chance? I am applying Early Decision. I appreciate all feedback, thank you!

Very good stats, high chance of admission.

What is your class rank?

School doesn’t send class rank. Any more feedback?

I’m not too sure about your chances for HumEc, honestly. If that’s your unweighted GPA at the time of applying, then it raises a red flag regardless of any hooks. Are there any extenuating circumstances behind your low freshman year? What were your sophomore and junior year GPA’s? Lastly, do your teacher and counselor recommendations support your upward trend and major interests?

I know that URM status can help a lot, but Cornell is getting more selective on all counts, including legacies and faculty kids. You’ll have to send out a really strong application and hope for the best. Write a really good essay.

Best of luck!

Fresh: 2.0
Soph: 3.4
Jr: 3.9

Both my English teacher’s recommendation and my Common App essay discuss how transitioning from an urban school to a suburban, primarily white school caused me to struggle, but also explain how I was eventually able to overcome adversity and excel academically.

I understand that my admission is unlikely, but it is nevertheless my favorite school. I think I’m going to give it a shot.

More comments are welcome and appreciated!

I think your story may be compelling enough (and your test scores high enough) to give you a chance of overcoming your low freshman year grades. Right now your essays are the only thing you have control of so make sure you get assistance from your english teacher in proof reading, etc.

My common app essay is strong. I’m still working on the supplement but that should be good too. Hoping my passion will come through. Thanks for the feedback!

I ended up applying ED. We’ll see what happens! Wish me luck.

Did you get in?
