Chance Me - EA CoE

Alright,

First and foremost, I’m from Escanaba, Michigan which is a more rural area in Michigan’s upper peninsula. I’m a white male with my grandfather being an alumnus.

Class Rank: 26 out of 175
GPA: 3.9
New SAT: 1280(620 math, 660 reading)
ACT: 33 composite(29 math, 30 English, 35 reading, 36 science, 7 essay)
AP Classes Taken: Stats, Chemistry (mind you my school only offers stats, chem, bio, and English)
Dual Enrolled Classes: Calculus I and II
Key Classes Taken Before High School: Algebra I
Key Freshmen Classes: Accelerated Geometry, Accelerated English, Spanish I
Key Sophomore Classes: Accelerated English, Algebra II, Bio, some Spanish II
Key Junior Classes: Precalc, Accelerated Chem, Accelerated English, Pre-Engineering
Key Senior Classes: AP Stats, AP Chem, dual enrolled Calc I/II, physics
Common App Essays: ~8/10
Teacher Recommendation: 10/10

I’ve also been on our FIRST robotics team since freshman year. I’m now the team captain and lead programmer. I’m also the captain of our high school bowl team, as well as being on our debate team.

Most people that have gone to Michigan from my high school have had very similar stats to myself.

Wow that looks great…you’ll know soon enough! Me too but OOS

i wouldnt submit ur SAT but ur chances look good

Keep the ACT, get rid of the SAT. They only need one, and your ACT is much more competitive. Would like to see your gpa a touch higher, but being in state and rural will help. My opinion, your chances are good.

@MaryGJ Seriously? A 3.9UW gpa is too low? I don’t think so. This is why I regret ever making any Chance Me posts and venturing onto others. It’s absurd to tell some kid that just wants to hear reassurance that they’ll get into their dream school that a 3.9 gpa is not quite good enough. It’s discouraging. @thecoopster20 I hate to say this, but your application looks good. You have a GREAT gpa and ACT score.

Much obliged everyone. Not concerned about my GPA, the only reason it’s a 3.9 is because I got a B+ in Spanish one semester.

OP did not indicate whether gpa was weighted or unweighted. Seems like a brilliant guy who tests well…so why is his rank at a rural school 26th? That seemed odd to me, and made me wonder if he was quoting weighted. Am glad to see him taking Calc and physics dual enrollment. That will help. That 36 on ACT science will stand out. As I stated, I think he has good chances.

as1799…people who have 3.9 gpas are turned down from UMich’s CoE every year. Engineering is extremely competitive. People who ask to be chanced really can’t cry “no fair” if they don’t like what they hear. Does it concern me a little that someone applying to CoE has a class rank of 26th at a rural school? Yeah, it does.

But in thecoopster’s case, he has a few things going for him that I believe will give him a terrific edge.

  1. Being in state.
  2. Being from a rural school.
  3. Having strong Math and Science prep including Calc 1 and 2, AP Chem and Physics.<---HUGE
  4. That 36 ACT science shows strong aptitude for the language of science....graphs, charts, analysis.

I think he will very likely be accepted.

The only (mild) weakness in your application is your 29 Math subscore. Don’t send in your SAT. Everything else looks great! There are very few UP applicants, and even fewer with your qualifications.
