Chance Me (EA) for Tulane

“From what I’ve heard, Tulane values test scores FAR ABOVE any other admissions criteria. An 1870 is undeniably low for the typically accepted student.”

Yes that’s low, but you’re completely wrong. Test scores are not above grades…I visited a month ago, and the admissions counselor NEVER said that. I have no idea where you are getting that piece of info from.

Shermani is who i was referring to as wrong.

@ elizabethj Generally, that is the case with all colleges. a stronger gpa is more valuable in college admissions than a higher test score

Actually, it varies by college, but for almost all it really is a balance between all the factors they ask for. Test scores (unless test optional), GPA, strength of schedule, EC’s, recs, and essays/personal statements give them an overall picture that makes up their decision. All schools like to brag about high average SAT scores and/or a high percentage in the top 10% of their class, but not to the extent that they exclude or even minimize the other factors.

exactly @thegreentea68 & fallenchemist.

I simply felt obligated to reply because the previous post said “FAR ABOVE” admissions criteria, and I didn’t want others to sit here and be discouraged by something that is not entirely true.

Agreed, elizabethj. I know a number of students that got in with SAT scores around greentea’s, but their GPA’s were much higher. At least a couple of those students (I just haven’t heard from the others) are doing very well now that they are at Tulane, both academically and socially.

I’m not trying to argue my case for admission but the school that I go to is much harder than a public school. Most of the time all grades in my school that are in a B range are an A in a public school. So the GPA can be based diffferently. I’m definetly not top of the class though. I’m more around the 40% percentile.

greentea- that is why Tulane specifically states that they go more by class rank than GPA, because GPA’s are hard to compare. Sometimes we use the terms interchangeably, but technically it is more about how you did in your school given its rigor, rather than an exact number. If your 3.1 were in the top 5% of your class, then 3.1 would be great. But as you say, it isn’t in the top part of the class.

@ Elizabeth,
This is what I heard from a Tulane alumnus who works in admissions. If what she said was mistaken, I sincerely apologize.

Green Tea:

What school do you go to in Mass?

Writing is the least important of the three. You will not receive an answer adequate to what you wanted on this forum but you never know if you apply only to Tulane. Getting in a fight or irritating forum members will not help you though or increase your chances of getting in.

I submitted my application the 11th. i checked online today and it still says my application is incomplete (missing step 2, SAT scores, personal statement). I also sent the test scores around the 11th of nov. (maybe even earlier). should i start worrying? it says to wait a COUPLE days. its been more than 2 or 3 days…

If you asked the College Testing Service to send you SAT scores only a few days ago, it takes longer than that for them to send, Tulane to receive, and for it to get loaded to your file. Give it another week.

Perhaps, I’m not looking at this process correctly, but if you submitted your application on the 11th, you are overly optimistic to expect a decision within five days when we are quickly approaching the deadline of December 15th. I’m sure the Admission Office is swamped with applications, and it can take a few days for your scores to be electronically
sent and recieved, too.

Regarding the Testing Boards sending the scores. If you look on their websites you will see that they send the scores at proscribed times throughout the month. If you happen to miss one of the transmissions then your score will wait until the next transmission is scheduled for that particular school. This is the reason why you can pay extra for an expedited transmission of your score, otherwise you’re at the mercy of the regular schedule set up between the Testing Board and the school. At this time of year I would presume that most schools are getting feeds regularly as they approach deadlines, but one school I’m aware of only receives feeds on Tuesdays and Thursday for example according to their Admissions Office.

My son took the ACT in October, and the scores came out on Tuesday. By Friday, Tulane had them in the system. Just FYI. That was not expedited either.

If anyone was wondering - I got accepted and will attend

Very glad to hear that! Congratulations, after all the wondering and effort you put in you must be quite pleased.

Yeah for sure. just wished i applied early action around october and got over this college process early!

Hello,
First, let me say how much I appreciate those of you who take time to post in such detail; I’ve learned a lot about Tulane (which I think of as a great spot for my S) from your insights. Now to the heart of it: our high school is super rigorous and nationally recoginzed…it’s nearly impossible for most students to rank within the top 10%. Forgive me, but we have a demographic that includes shall we say a lot of “tiger moms” in our community, so my bright kid has not excelled. His academic rigor has been decent, but his GPA is only around 3.3 - 3.4. His SAT score, on the other hand, was a 2200, first attempt, one sitting. I’m certain that if he attended another high school, his GPA would be much higher, so I view the standardized tests as the great equalizer. My opinion, however, only goes so far…right? Can you provide an honest assessment of his chances? I need to know if we should include Tulane as one of the two school to notify of his status as a “commended scholar” from National Merit, and don’t want to waste it on a school for which he has no chance. Thanks!
