Chance Me EA

I usually hate posting these "chance me" threads because, let's be real, a bridge troll with a 200 SAT could get in over an applicant with a 2400 SAT and 4.0 GPA. But here goes:

SCHOOL: College of Language, Sciences, and the Arts
PREFERRED ADMISSION: Ross School of Business
INTENDED MAJOR: Economics

GPA: 3.92 W, 3.7 UW
SAT: 2060/1400 (CR:720 M:680 W:660) one sitting
ACT: N/A
CLASS RANK: Top 10% in class of 420
AP: AP US History (5), AP Language (4), AP Micro, AP Chemistry
CURRENT COURSES: AP Calculus AB, AP Macroeconomics, AP Statistics, AP Literature
TEACHER RECOMMENDATIONS: Excellent
GUIDANCE COUNSELOR RECOMMENDATION: Excellent
ESSAYS: Okay, I really struggled with them
DEMOGRAPHICS: Black/Hispanic female from predominately white area. Semi-competitive New Jersey public high school.
HOOKS: URM, first generation college student
EC: Class of 2014 Student Government Organization Member (4 years), Varsity Track and Field (3 years), Elijah's Promise Volunteer

STRENGTHS: Stellar academician, great recommendations, good test scores, high class ranking and good grade point average (I know it's a little low for OOS)
WEAKNESSES: Essay and extracurriculars
IF DEFERRED: If I'm deferred I have all "A"s for the first two quarters (1st semester) of school, writing another essay showing my interest, and every intention of taking the SAT again.

GENERAL COMMENTS: I think I have a good chance of getting deferred from Ross but accepted to LSA itself (I'm not sure if that's how it works). My only fear is that if I am accepted that I won't be able to pay because of the Non Custodial Profile attached to the CSS Profile. Good luck to all!

UMI: low reach/high match

Don’t listen to cabooser. You should get in. Ross preadmit, however, is a reach. I have a 4.0 and 31 ACT which is about the same as your SAT. I applied for Ross preadmit as a reach. Most of their ACT’s scores are about 34. The only thing holding you back would be OOS and essays.

I’d say your UW GPA and your SAT is a bit low, but overall you’re pretty competitive. Keep in mind, though, even the best statistics can be brought down by a bad essay. I’d agree with allforthebest–Ross seems like a reach. I think you’ve got a decent chance at LSA, though! :)

Thanks so much  I knew Ross was a bit of a reach but anything can happen. This college admissions process is all a game of luck anyway.
But I’ll keep all this in mind in the next few days when decisions come out.
As I always say, “Expect the worst and hope for the best”
Good luck to you guys. GO WOLVERINES

“SCHOOL: College of Language, Sciences, and the Arts”

SgtEllie: Be aware that the actual name is “College of Literature, Science, and the Arts.”

I got sick of people saying “don’t listen to xxx”. I don’t see anyone’s chancing to a more accurate speculation than anyone else. You just tell your version of chancing.
Anyway, uwGPA 3.7 and SAT 2060 are both near the 25% for UMich overall. For in state LSA, it should be a match to high match. For oos LSA, it would be a rather high match. For Ross pre-admit, it would be a reach disregarding in state or oos.

woops, haha. Literature* Science and the Arts.

680 math is exceedingly low for an econ major at an elite university, not saying it isn’t possible, but unless you have taken some kind of calculus or something in high school as supplement this may be looked down upon.

^ You don’t apply to econ major directly. You just apply to LSA.

At UMich every applicant enters the university undecided to a school (and sometimes with preferred admission). The University does not know I plan on majoring in economics. Hence “intended major” :)

The chance for UM is low.

For anyone reading this a year or two down the line, I was accepted! Good luck to all who may ever come across my thread, and may my statistics be a beneficial tool to aid you in your journey to college. Please feel free to private message me at any time if you have any questions  GO BLUE

Congratulations! A great achievement as a first gen student!

Thank you!!!
