Extracurriculars (As it appears on my Common App) (name, grade levels, leadership, description):
-Varsity Football, 9-12,1 of 5 Captains, 22 hours/week, 35 weeks/year (Obviously my main extracurricular as it is a massive investment of time and energy, I have no real desire to play in college nor was I scouted to, however, the team is competitive in the state of Florida and is a perennial playoff contender, if it matters.)
-Latin Club, 9-12, Vice-President, 2 hours/week, 15 weeks/year, National Junior Classical League member and local Latin Forum participant, 3 time medalist on the yearly National Latin Exam.
-NHS Tutor, 11-12, 4 hours per week, 30 weeks/year.
-"Big Brother" Mentor/Founding member (A club aimed at easing the freshman transition into a rigorous high school through bi-weekly meetings in class), 12, 2 hours/week, 10 weeks/year

-Muscular Dystrophy Association Volunteer (Did a few one-time projects with this organization to aid children afflicted with the disease over my Junior year), 11, 5 hours/week, 4 weeks/year

-Teacher Assistant at various underprivileged elementary schools (Via my school's "Project Outreach" program which connects us specifically with teachers and their classes over our spring/winter breaks), 10-12, 25 hours/week, 2 weeks/year

-Summer Football Counselor (Hosted twice a year for 1 week, my high school offers football camps over summer break to aid in the development of football fundamentals in children), 10-12, 25 hours/week, 2 weeks/year

Recs:

Teacher Recommendation #1: Senior English teacher, good, not grand, most likely speaks to my intelligence if nothing else, the teacher has been teaching for ~40 years and is a great rec writer, but it may not be as personal as I would like it to be.
Teacher Recommendation #2: Senior calc teacher, good, mainly the same issue as above
(I have to rely on senior teachers because the three teachers that I had in mind from my junior year all either retired or were fired. It’s unfortunate, but I’ve made the best of a bad situation)
Counselor Rec: Great, both counselors from my school know me well and collaborated to write it.

Additional Info/Rec: none
Interview: Not yet

Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):
Why Penn: 8, Talked about my passions in community service, specific mentions of the service opportunities at Penn, and my sister currently being involved in service there. (More on that later)
CommonApp Essay: 9, Talked about winless streak in my early football career and how it relates to determination, perseverance, and how it impacted my life.

Weaknesses:
-GPA
-Teacher Recs

Now here’s where things get interesting. My mother graduated from Penn in 1984 and my sister is currently enrolled in her sophomore year. I’m aware that my application isn’t laden with hard, objective stats (I hate my G.P.A.), but I feel that my 34 ACT, football career, and large amount of community service make me, at least to some degree, competitive for ED. However, with legacy and a sister currently enrolled (I've heard rumors about Penn accepting a higher rate of siblings somewhere in my travels), I like to think that it’ll make my application pop more than others. This situation is so special that even my college counselor has next to no idea about my chances, and it’s driving me insane.

So, wise members of CC, do you have any words of wisdom, advice, or opinions on my chances? I understand that the college admissions process at the ivies is largely a crapshoot once you become “competitive”, but i’d at least like some kind of idea.

40% of Penn legacies who apply ED are accepted. Your stats sound pretty good, you have a good chance.
Good luck!

Hmmm pretty good chance with legacy. However, the low GPA/Top 20% class rank is a definite issue, but hopefully Penn will overlook that in favour of your legacy status.

You have a chance. However, as @Falcon1 has pointed, only 6% of admits are outside the top 10%.

If your gpa, ACT, class rank and reference letters are weaknesses, I am not sure whether legacy will be enough to overcome those things. I suppose it depends on how strong the pool of legacy applicants is this year.

Thanks for the nod @Much2learn‌

At 10.2%, I’d say you’re still okay but only taking 3 AP’s when your school offers 12 could be a problem. Being at the low end of the gpa range and not taking the most challenging courses is a bit of a red flag. A lot will depend on what your teachers and GC say about you. That you feel your recs are a weakness is not a good thing, Hopefully, you’re wrong about this.

Having a parent and a sibling attend Penn is definitely a plus. If your mother has been actively involved at the school that’s a slightly better tip. I’ve also heard instances where AO’s call up a sibling’s app and also review current performance. I think they can upload an app for something like three years.

I don’t do chances so all I can say here is like most of the applicants you definitely have a shot at getting the golden ticket. Hope everything works out for you!

Legacy is definitely a help, especially during early decision. However, I think your relatively low GPA might do you in, unfortunately.

Wow, I feel Im really similar to you. Im also a legacy that applied early to CAS, but I do crew instead of football.
Anyway Id give you a 50% chance (again that GpA is bringing you down). Also, if you don’t mind, can you please chance me back thanks!
