Chance Me - Engineering

applying for fall '17 transfer

Major: Mechanical Engineer

In-state: yes (cc transfer), but not near Pomona

IGETC: yes, plan to finish by spring '17

Major prep: everything on assist that my cc offered
*Calc 1-3, Linear Algebra, Diff Eq, Physics series, General Chemistry (did 1&2 although CPP only required 1), Statics and Strength of Materials, Dynamics, Electronic Circuits, Microeconomics

EC: not much, a couple clubs, minimal volunteering (is this going to affect me a lot since I don’t have many EC’s?)

GPA: currently 2.99 (but because I have a failed class which I would be retaking this fall) but after the fall, it should be around 3.33-3.39

They do their decision based on GPA after the term you apply right (so after this fall)?

It’s still doable. The average GPA for the fall 2015 class was 3.72 (unweighted) and Mechanical Engineering is one of the toughest majors to get in as they only took 24% of those who applied in 2015. SATs (reading, math) and GPA are all they look at. However, if you reach 3.39 and score well (1250-1300 in the SAT for reading and writing) you may be competitive.

with a 2.99 - probably not. With a 3.3ish, maybe. Be sure to also apply to some less competitive schools. Perhaps Sac or SF.

Your advantage is that you have completed all the prerequisites. CPP, like most other universities, like that a lot. Your disadvantage is that your GPA is on the lower side. I am a Fall 2016 EE transfer and when I attended the transfer orientation back in June, several of the guys next to me were ME transfers. Their transfer GPAs where all around 3.8 or so. As I am sure you are already aware, getting into any impacted engineering program at CPP is very tough. Everyone in this area wants to transfer to CPP because of the strength and reputation of their engineering program. ME is statistically the toughest with EE following closely. If you can get your GPA up to 3.3ish you might have a fair chance. Consider other schools to be on the safe side as well. I hope everything works out for you.

@NCalRent they only look at your GPA after the fall, in which I will have 3.3+. I looked on their website and I think either fall 2015, their average acceptance gpa for engineering was 3.3

*i’m latino if that even matters (which have the highest transfer rate on that link)

@ZENgineer bro, I’m transferring, not applying as a freshman. although I don’t think I have to send my SAT scores, i did get 620 on math when I took it and it was 88th percentile I believe

@epower1 I will have 3.3+ gpa and when I looked on their website, their average gpa for transfer engineer was 3.3 fall 2015 http://www.cpp.edu/~irar/just-the-facts/new-transfer.shtml . And yeah I’m going to have IGETC and all the pre reqs done which hopefully helps my case a lot. And I’m considering other schools, this isn’t my first choice but I wouldn’t mind attending this school either.

@hesantos best of success to you and whichever school you pick. CPP is a fine choice amongst many other great California schools.

Race plays no role in your admission at any CA public.

Apply to a few schools - a 3.3 may, or may not do the trick for a non-local applicant. Sac and SF are 2 that are worth a look.
