Chance me for a variety of schools?

About My High School:

The high academic goals and commensurate achievements of my school are best represented by the school’s rating as the Top Comprehensive Public High School in California for the past 3 years. My school was also ranked by US News and World Report as the 4th best open enrollment public high school nationwide, and Newsweek ranked my school 10th best in the U.S. for math and science, and 1st among public high schools. With these impressive rankings, 2011 graduation rate of my school is 99%, college enrollment rate is 96%, and its SAT scores (writing, reading, math) are more than 30% higher than state and national levels.

Also, any ideas on affordable (tuition less than 20K for me, keeping in mind I'm a California resident with fairly affording parents and a younger sibling in high school) reputable universities I could likely get into with these stats?

Ah yes, I’m a Pakistani-American (I’m born here, parents born and educated there) if that makes any difference.

You have a weak GPA, an excellent SAT score and not very strong ECs. Problem is with an unbalanced GPA-SAT a lot of colleges will see you as being “lazy” so that will hurt you. Being Pakistani will probably hurt you seeing as your going to be put into the Asian bracket for those schools. A good amount of the schools you listed are very competitive and have a large amoutn of Asian students applying so I have to say for schools like Stanford, Berkeley and UCLA i don’t really see you getting in. I see you as competitive for CSUs but I don’t see you getting into UNC. I think you should get into Santa Clara and I would say USC is a reach. Sorry out of curiosity if your Pakistani(in which your probably muslim, I am too) then why would you want to go to BYU? Its a pretty strict Mormon school? But i’d say you could get in there too, but i’m not really sure about their admission requirements like if they give boosts to non-Mormons or not.

Chance me?

Putting aside the issue of affordability, you might want to consider applying to schools in the United Kingdom. I say this because basically, they go by standardized test scores there, and in that area, you are top notch.

I don’t think you have any chance at Stanford.

The fact you even mentioned Stanford indicates to me that you may be overly optimistic about your college chances.

My son had very high SATs also, but gpa seems in general to be more important in the selection process.

You might want to take a look at University of Michigan. That seems to be somewhat easier to get into than other top schools.

You should be able to get an idea from you guidance counselor at your high school how kids in your situation (high SAT, low gpa) have done in terms of college admissions in prior years.

Hopefully, there are some colleges out there that realize that a 3.0 in your high school is probably equivalent to a 3.7 at many other high schools.

From what I know, your best chance would be for the UCSB/UC Irvine type schools rather than the UCLA/Berkeley schools, but since in California, all you have to do is check off the box to apply to a particular school, nothing is lost by applying to a lot of them.

Thanks for the responses, I’m happy to see how helpful this community can be.

@coola: Yes, I am muslim, and the reason why BYU was a consideration for me is because of the low tuition and great image of the school to prospective employers. I’m all for building bridges, so the religious affiliation of a school wouldn’t throw me off.

@floridadad: Actually, the only reason I included LA, Berkeley, and Stanford in that list was at the behest of my parents. I’m under no illusions as to the calibre of universities I should be targeting (I’m hoping for Santa Clara or UC Davis personally at this point). I’m actually not too keen on moving to Michigan, so sadly, despite the great suggestion, it’s not on my list at this point. I am actually applying to the UK though, so it’s great to see some reassurance about my prospects there.

Now, more specifically, could someone remark on my chances at USC, Santa Clara, and UC Davis?

ahh…yes, also, can anyone remark on the accuracy of parchment.com?
