Soo, what are my chances at:
Stanford (doesn't look at freshman grades)
Carnegie Mellon (same)
Princeton (same)
Swarthmore
Bowdoin
Yale
Dartmouth
Brown
Tufts
UVA
UPenn
UChicago

Stanford (doesn’t look at freshman grades) REACH FOR ANYBODY
Carnegie Mellon (same) MATCH
Princeton (same) REACH FOR ANYBODY
Swarthmore REACH
Bowdoin HIGH MATCH
Yale REACH FOR ANYBODY
Dartmouth REACH
Brown REACH FOR ANYBODY
Tufts MATCH
UVA MATCH
UPenn REACH FOR ANYBODY
UChicago MATCH

You need some more matches and a few safetys,. You will get a full ride at UConn, if that’s something you might want to consider.

Your GPA and class rank are a bit low, otherwise I’d say you had a good chance for Yale. I applied to environmental studies and I had many of the same sort of environment+writing ECs. It will depend on the intangibles, I’m afraid.

I agree with soze as well; pick at least one safety.

Thanks… ‘reach for anybody’ really doesn’t help me, but thank you for identifying what you think my matches are.

Djdopeslap: Do I have a decent shot? Or do you think that it isn’t worth applying?

Also - I think this is pretty cool - I forgot to mention that I have participated in 5 Climate Change/Energy etc. summits and conferences, both national and global. I am apart of a group of about 15 other teens who attend.

u helped me so i will help you :)

All the ivies are hard to get into for even 4.0 students so I highly doubt those
but Tufts looks good

I’m hoping that some of my standout EC’s (national awards, publishing a novel, lots of environmental work) will give me a boost, especially at those schools which do not count freshman grades. Any thoughts on how much my EC’s/fairly high SAT score will help?

Thanks :]

ECs do not make up for having SATs or class rank below what a college is seeking.

If you DO have the scores and rank that the college is looking for, then ECs will help to differentiate you.

I certainly know that EC’s do not make up for anything. I was thinking that they could simply boost my chances?

Anyways, my projected score of a 2340 should be good enough. My rank will probably be 10/530ish

Stanford (doesn’t look at freshman grades): reach
Carnegie Mellon (same): high match
Princeton (same): reach
Swarthmore: match
Bowdoin: match
Yale: reach
Dartmouth: high reach
Brown: low reach
Tufts: high match
UVA: match/low match
UPenn: I actually think you have a really good chance here. Your ECs are really good in my opinions. High Match
UChicago: Low Reach

Thanks, oneheadlight!

Can you please explain your reasoning for some? I’m a bit confused why Yale is just a reach while Dartmouth is a high reach, and Brown is only a low reach.

Yale, Brown, Swmore, etc. are reaches for anybody without a hook.

(I know a 4.0/2400 who didn’t get into any of these)

Even though you have exceptional qualifications, you really have to consider all of these reaches, as everybody should.

Hahah, I definitely consider those schools as reaches for me. I’ll apply to 2 or 3 safeties.

I still think it’s worth applying. The national/global conferences are interesting and should help you out.

You have phenomenal ECs. No, ECs generally don’t make up for low numbers, but your numbers aren’t particularly low, and your rank is top 2%. Besides which, people who ask if their ECs will make up for a low GPA are generally just presidents of twelve thousand school clubs. What you’ve accomplished is significant, and if you can package it well, I imagine you have an excellent shot at all of your schools.

Wow, thank you so much, glassesarechic. I really hope that I do have excellent shots at the schools. By packaging it well, do you mean writing amazing essays that display my passions and having my recommendations tie in with my EC’s?

Yeah, that’s what glassesarechic means. I think you should def. play up the environmental work. That’s what impressed me most.
