Chance me for Amherst..?

Hi! Thanks for taking the time to chance me… I know it’s dumb because I already submitted my app and everything but I’m feeling very nervous as decisions are coming up :frowning:

Intended Major: English or Linguistics + Art

Gender: Female

Race: White

UW GPA: 3.9

W GPA: 4.65

ACT: 34 (36 E, 36 R, 29 M, 34 S) + 31 Writing

APs: AP Euro (4), AP Lang (5), APUSH (4), AP Bio, AP Psych, AP Art, AP Lit, AP Spanish Lang (all my other classes all 4 years have been honors except math- my big weak area lol)

Extracurriculars:

-Intern/Student at Local Art School: Spent over 450 hours in the studio the past summer working on my portfolio and 18 hours a week during the school year. I help teach kids there as well- helping them with techniques as well as organizing stuff and aiding the director of the school. 1000+ hours at the least throughout highschool

-Newspaper Illustrator: Illustrated for very prestigious school newspaper (3rd best in country) in 11th and 12th grade: won “Best Image of the Issue” 3x

-Book Club: This is so dorky, but I’ve been president of book club since sophomore year. What can I say- I really love books!

-Interact- Community service club at my school.Through this and Habitat I likely have at least 150 service hours. Participated in 11th and 12th grade.

-Spanish Honor Society: Inducted as an officer in 12th grade (when it started). Probably like 2 hours a week?

AWARDS:

National Honor Society, Cum Laude Society, Illinois State Scholar, National Spanish Exam Silver Medalist, School Scholar (awarded to kids who maintain a weighted GPA of 4.5 or above), various local and statewide art awards and exhibitions

RECS:

My art teacher’s rec is amazing- she called me “one of the most gifted students” she’d ever taught. My English teacher’s rec is really good too- we are very close. I don’t know my counselor as well but she likes me well enough.

ESSAYS:

My common app essay is probably my strongest essay- wrote it about my time spent in airports as an expat and how it inspired my creativity and curiosity. My Amherst essays were pretty good- both focused on art.

EXTRA INFO:

I lived in Japan for three years and have traveled much of the world because of my dad’s job. I also submitted a portfolio to Amherst, which I can post if you guys want. I think my art is my strong point in my application. Also, just in case you’re curious or it helps at all, I’ve already been accepted to UW Madison, BU, and Colby.

Please don’t be afraid to be honest. I know I don’t have fantastic numbers, and that Amherst is very selective, so it’s not like i’m expecting an acceptance or anything like that. Thanks again!

You say that you don’t have fantastic numbers, but that is definitely not true. Your GPA and test scores are excellent, and you have demonstrated incredible passion in your EC’s (and I don’t need to see your art to know it’s amazing!). While I don’t know too much about Amherst, I know that you have a great shot at many very selective schools (less than 15-20% acceptance rates, to be specific). You should be more confident – as long as you applied to a good amount of schools, you should expect positive results. While it is hard for me to say your chances for Amherst, I would be very surprised if you weren’t accepted or at least waitlisted. I wish you the best of luck, and I’d appreciate it if you could chance me back!

Also, congratulations on Colby and BU! These are great schools!

@imstressed247 Hello! It looks like your are definitely academically prepared for Amherst. You seem to be well-balanced with clubs, awards, and classes. Now it is all about deciding whether there is something that really sets you apart/above other applicants. This does seem to be the case, with your invested interest in art. From what you’ve said, it seems like you have a very good shot at getting in. Best of luck!
