Recommendations
-One of my AP teachers is a former UPenn student and she will give me a fabulous recommendation.
-My guidance counselor will give me a pretty good one, too.
-One of my science AP teachers will give me a really good letter of rec and she got accepted to UPenn but when to a sister Ivy.
-I have a teacher that has won several national awards that will definitely give me a "to die for" letter of rec.

Essay
-I have some really great stories about my experience in the rehabilitation/physical therapy gym that have made people cry and never forget. I'm sure I could utilize these experiences to write a very good college essay.

Sorry for the long post guys! I am currently an incoming senior in HS and I really want to become a doctor. I know I have enough passion and determination, but I don't know if my grades and scores are good enough to get into these accelerated programs. I want to know if I could get into any 6 or 7 yr programs to become a doctor (Penn State U-Thomas Jefferson MC, Rutgers U-NJMS, U Albany, The College of New Jersey-NJMS, Brown U, DrewU-NJMS, Rutgers U-Rowan U, ). If you guys need any more information please let me know. Thank you so much!

Academic Weighted GPA 98.44??? What?

@dubnation Lol our school does it out of 100, which is why I didn’t know how it would convert to a 4.0 scale.

bump…

bump…

No one is ever sure with Ivies, but especially with your volunteer hours, you most likely stand out. What are your ACT scores? Also talk to your counseled about the GPA. Other than that you seem like a pretty good candidate

@whitemarshmallow‌ I didn’t take the ACTs, bc I was pretty satisfied with my SAT scores. The ACT conversion of my SAT scores is a 34 and almost a 35, if that helps.

@alwayssona:

Your SAT scores and GPA looks fantastic. ECs look superb.

Couple of weaknesses: your AP scores in biology, physics and calculus. These are low and you are kind of forced to submit them. If you don’t submit the scores, the AdComs will wonder why you didn’t take the AP exam. Is there a way you can get your guidance counsellor to weave this sub-story into their letter?

Also you don’t have any research experience. Have you ever worked in a lab? Done any experiments? If so please highlight them. You wrote that you volunteer at a “store” for 1000+ hours. What type of store is this?

You are a strong match for most of the BA/MD programs, reach for Ivies. For HYPMS you need some more awards of national/international prominence.

Woah

@sgopal2‌ Thank you for the reply. I know my AP scores are a bit low, but I could say that I felt SATs were more important or that I would spend the rest of my life studying the three subjects (MCATs, etc.) so I wanted to explore something a little different. Because I actually did write a portfolio of poems and what not on my own. And my GC would definitely do anything I ask.

I have not worked in a lab, because I am not really focusing on the research. All of the labs I applied to end up closing down (in Philadelphia). So I’m going to say that as a doctor I want to focus not on research which is very aloof from a patient, but on the experience of the patient and helping them get through their difficulty. So I’m thinking that will help with the lack of research. My team was a world finalist for Odyssey of the Mind which is like a STEM competition.

Thank you for the reply. It was very informative. I’m just worried, because BA/MD programs have a 2% acceptance rate, which is less than Ivies. I can’t see myself being anything other than a doctor, so I want this pretty bad.

You look great in everything except your AP scores, which are so low they might actually bar you from admission into a BA/MD program. You said you couldn’t see yourself as anything but a doctor, but you don’t have any shadowing experience or experience interning in other fields. Then again, the programs you are applying to are lower end, so I would say mid reach for BA MD, and high reach for HYPMS.

@alwayssona wrote:

So you are applying to top tier medical schools as a pre-med and Ivys and NOT interested in research? WRONG answer. Come up with something else, as this will make people worried that you are not truly interested in medicine.

BA/MD programs have a low acceptance rate, but they generally take the kids who couldn’t get into Ivies

AP scores are a bit weird it seems…may be the teacher, since you did better on the self study ones…besides that, you should be able to get into one or two of the ivies with those credentials, but obviously its a reach for any single one of them, I’m just playing the odds. I don’t know ANYTHING about med programs so I can;t really say anything there…also, could you PM me about how you raised your SAT score to a 2310 after only a 199 psat?? that’s amazing!

AP scores and no research will kill your chances at most BS/Md programs, Ivies are very reachable reaches.

@Smargent I am going to shadow a couple of doctors in August just so I can have that under my belt. Also I know my AP scores are low, but I seriously didn’t think they mattered. My GC told me colleges don’t look at AP scores unless you want AP credit. I have no problem taking the classes again in college.

@sgopal2‌ Really? Wow. I didn’t think research was so integral to my application. I thought experience in a hospital setting was enough. What happened was my bad luck. Both last summer and this summer I applied to several labs, and they all shut down. It was really weird. And they were all in Philly. I can’t really go farther than that, because I skipped a grade and I’m not old enough to drive. Is there any way I can do ANYTHING to make up for research?

@soccerlover17 I will definitely PM you! I wish I had someone to give me advice when I was preparing to take the SATs lol.

@theanaconda‌ Darn. But none of the programs say anything about AP scores. I thought you only had to show them if you wanted AP credit. And I don’t really care about AP credit, I’ll take the classes in college again. I don’t mind. Like I asked @sgopal2‌ is there any way to make up for not doing research?

Ap scores aren’t a huge factor; but 3’s are still low with minimal prep. Try to explain the situation with the labs closing down and write strong essays. Your shadowing should help you as well.

@theanaconda Thanks again!

My 98.44 converts to 3.9 on a 4.0 scale. I asked my GC last night. That is a 3.9 weighted.

@sgopal2, ignore him. He clearly is not in the medical field. Some people get into medical school AND become doctors without ever doing academic research. Once again he is wrong, plenty of people turn down ivy league schools for placement into BA/MD programs. That was a terribly misinformed reply, think twice before commenting. Also, you don’t have to do research in high school or even show interest to get into these programs. You just need to be an all-around good applicant who shows a genuine and honest interest in pursuing medicine as a career.

Also… to the OP, I really don’t think you should list that you skipped the 2nd grade because they won’t care about what happened in elementary school. In fact, this might come off in a bad light. Secondly, please don’t list every club you have ever attended for one meeting, list the important ones that you have been most involved with. Lastly, look into B.S./D.O. and B.A./D.O programs. If you really want to get into one of these programs you are going to have to apply to every single program in the United States. Just keeping it 1hunnet.
