Other random things (just so you get to know my personality a little better:
-Played soccer, volleyball, and did Tae Kwan Do (second degree black belt) until I tragically (lol) dislocated my knee during a sparring accident
-Indian, but born in the US; first in my entire ancestry to be a natural citizen here, as well as first female in my family to be choosing an education on my own terms (My mother went to college, but it was not her choice to do so. No other females have been educated that far.)
-Really interested in a lot theology stuff, as well as political things, but I’m a total atheist and liberal (Green Party, what up)
-Very musically inclined; I play 12 instruments, and most of them for a long time (ie at least 5-6 years)
Volunteer work: Lots of hospital stuff (200+), volunteered at a hospital for two weeks overseas
Research: Got to work in a lab for two months over the summer junior year, and another lab this summer before senior year. Most probably will get my name in a neuroradiology publication

Sorry if this is a lot of extra and unimportant detail, but I don’t know, anything anyone can draw from anywhere would be helpful to me. Thank you so much. I’m really stressing about college a lot, and I just want advice on how to improve my chances more.

I had very similar stats as a junior (eerily similar), and I got in RD this year. You have many more extracurriculars than I did. I think you have a very good chance, especially ED, as long as you express your desire to attend, love of the open curriculum, etc. in your application.

Only note, since I don’t chance people: Brown is ED, not EA.

Erty, you are clearly very bright and accomplished, and trust me – if you apply to a good group of schools, you WILL be going to college.

Like bruno, I don’t do chances. But I will address your stress level about improving your chances.

At this point, you’ve done almost everything you can do – you have amazing grades, scores and ECs. Be confident that you’ve laid a really good foundation.

Now, you have to market yourself to colleges and convince them that they WANT you on their campus. Study college websites, visit campuses, talk to professors and students and alumni, read student newspapers/blogs/etc. Write applications that are specific for each school you are applying to, and don’t be modest about your accomplishments.

Second, apply to a really good list of schools. Find a safety school (both safety for admissions and cost) that you LOVE. A school you would be thrilled to attend. Find schools with rolling admission or early action, so that whatever happens at your lottery schools, you have an acceptance in hand before Dec. 15. Look very closely at good schools that are not Ivies and not based in the Northeast – look at liberal arts schools in the south and midwest, for example.

Hope this helped. Good luck.

Hi everyone. I am also reaching the end of my Junior year in HS. I just joined College Confidential and I was hoping that maybe you guys could help me out. I also want to do Early Action for Brown University. So, can you can please chance me? It would be a huge help.

GPA: 3.8

ACT: Still low, 25
Senior Year Courseload: English-IV Honors, AP Biology, AP Psychology, AP Human Geography, PreCalculus, Film Studies, Gym, and Accelerated Reading

If you guys could chance me it would be a huge help. I’m really starting to stress about college. I just need some advice :)

Sergiok, the custom is to start your own chance thread, not jump aboard someone else’s. Otherwise it can get confusing when people respond – to which person was that response directed?

For both of you chance requesters, it is my opinion that when dealing with adcom readers who only have 10-15 minutes to review your application, less is more. By that I mean that listing 15-20 activities doesn’t help your cause, it just makes you look like an unfocused compulsive joiner who shows up a couple of times a year but does little. There are only so many free hours a week and, if you had a passion and a desire to really accomplish something, you would pick a couple of ECs and run with them as far as you can. It is not necessary or desirable to list every activity you ever attended.

What do my esteemed colleagues bruno14, fireandrain, iwannabe_Brown and other regulars here think about this?

I entirely agree. Besides, the Common App only has room for a finite number of activities. You can just write in your number of volunteer hours. Honestly, Sergiok, all of those activities are not going to make up for a 25 ACT score.

Thanks for the advice. I’m well aware that 25 isn’t enough. I’m going to take it in September again.
