Chance a nervous junior for Brown (ED)?

Hi guys! Alright so I've been Brown-obsessed for quite a while, and so I thought I'd post my stats here to see how I'm doing. Out of all the ivies (with the exception of perhaps Stanford, because they don't even look at Freshman Year) I feel like I have the best shot at Brown because they look at your character and EC's most. Obviously, that's not why I love the school, but it's true... I think/hope.

Anyways, I'd really appreciate it if you guys could chance me! I'm going up to Brown on Monday for two days and I'm so excited, so it'd be very helpful to know where I stand just so I can benchmark how ~attached~ to the school I should get, haha.

Caucasian male, prestigious private school in Connecticut.
No financial aid necessary.

GPA: Large upward trend. My school does not rank, but if they did, I would be in the Top 8/85 (Top 10%).

Algebra 2H: B
Spanish 2H: B+
Biology: B+
History: B
Wind Ensemble: A-

English 11H: A-, A-
AP US History: A, B+ (junior spring is hard </3)
AP Environmental Science: A, A-
Pre Calculus: A+, A
Chamber Choir: A, A

^Those second semester grades are benchmarks. Obviously the year isn't over yet, haha.

Senior Year:
AP Spanish
AP English
AP Statistics
Honors Physics
Chamber Choir
International Relations (First Sem.), Intro to The Middle East (Second Sem.)
Global Thesis (I'll be concentrating on the Cuban poetry situation and doing extensive research in order to produce a complete thesis by the end of the year; Competitive Program).

High Honors Society first semester Junior Year, both semesters Sophomore Year, second semester of Freshman Year.

Headmaster’s List (contributes most to overall classroom learning environment) both semesters Sophomore Year.

Inducted into foreign language honors society at the end of Sophomore Year.

SAT (Right now I have 670/680/780 from January, but I just took them yesterday and I'm sort of guessing this is where I ended up. I focused on math, so I'm going to work on CR over the summer and get that up to hopefully ~730-740):
710 Critical Reading
720 Math
780 Writing

Intended Major: Business/Economics and English (Creative Writing).

Extra Curriculars:

1) I founded a literary magazine at beginning of sophomore year that donates proceeds to an organization that works to alleviate child labor in third world countries. I remain the editor-in-chief, and I’ve expanded the project to include almost 40 associate staff editors—the journal has attracted the writing of many impressive writers (see Connections section below).

1b) Put together a special feature about the Cuban dissident experience for my journal-- bilingual feature, featuring translating work as well as a call for action. The issue reflects nine months of research and a series of award-winning poems (see #3).

2) I am the runner-up for 2011 Elizabeth Bishop Prize in Verse sponsored by The Blue Pencil Online. I attended their inaugural ceremony to read my poem, which they published.

2a) I received the 2012 Elizabeth Bishop Prize in Verse, and have received a full scholarship to the summer program at Walnut Hill Arts School, which I have accepted.

3) I received the 2011 Renee Duke Youth Award from Poets for Human Rights for a series of five poems about the Cuban dissident experience.

4) I received a gold key for five poems in the 2011 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, and three gold keys (poetry, flash fiction, playwriting) and a silver key (poetry) in the 2012 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

5) I am the Junior Editor of high school literary magazine, and will be Senior Editor next year. I was also a staff member Sophomore Year.

6) My writing has been featured in over 140 independently-owned publications (some are extremely selective); I have been featured on my school's website for my work with my literary magazine and publication pursuits, and I am being featured in school's annual report magazine this year.

7) I will graduate high school with a Concentration in Global Studies (will take a global service trip to China this summer, will be taking AP Spanish, will write a 20-page thesis analyzing a global issue).

8) Bass/Baritone in my all-male a cappella group at high school starting Sophomore Year; won 3rd place in all-state a cappella championship Sophomore Year. I am Vice President and Arranger of the group, as of my Junior Year.

9) I played piano in the Young Musician's Festival (competitive musician program in March every year) in Freshman Year--Intermediate Level, 10/10 stars.

10) I am a member of my school’s Model UN Club. I traveled to Georgetown's NAIMUN conference Sophomore Year.

11) I attended Middlebury's New England Young Writers’ Conference last may (Sophomore Year).

12) I attended Stanford University’s EPGY between Sophomore and Junior Years, studying Creative Writing intensively for three weeks.

13) Two plays of mine were recently featured in my high school's Winter Showcase, and one play has been recruited for an outside-of-school gig.

13) Between Freshman and Sophomore Year, I volunteered as a camp counselor, and took care of an autistic child for six weeks.

14) I am a leading member of my school's GSA.

15) I am a member of Columbia University's Student Film Actors Pool (i.e. I act in student films there).

16) I am in two improv groups (will lead one in Senior Year).

17) I perform songs often at coffeehouses and school venues.

My essays, teacher recommendations, and interviews will all be great.

Connections:
- Someone very involved with Brown willing to write a rec and introduce me to reader for my county, as well as a collection of board members.
- Maintaining contact with a long-time Creative Writing professor there, who is a contributor to my journal. Meeting with him at the beginning of next week when I go up to Brown.

(and if you feel so inclined feel free to chance me for: Amherst, Duke, Emory, Georgetown, Northwestern, Tufts, WUSTL, Stanford).

I will /happily/ chance back! :)

Your EC’s are honestly amazing, probably the best I’ve seen on this site. Your grades are pretty good. I think you have a really good chance at Brown, but I’ve seen two awesome applicants who are close friends of mine get rejected and deferred (the former ended up getting into Johns Hopkins/Swarthmore and the latter is yet to be determined). So it’s definitely a crapshoot, but I think you have a great chance.

This is a little generous, but I think you’ll get into at least two or three of these:
Amherst- match
Duke- high match
Emory- match I think, don’t know a ton about their admissions
Georgetown- match
Northwestern- match
Tufts- in
WUSTL- high match
Stanford- low reach

I met the reader for my region, and it honestly doesn’t help at all. Don’t rely on meeting the person to get you in, because it makes little to no difference.
It looks like your stats are pretty good though. I think you have a pretty good chance of at least being deferred to regular decision.
Good luck!!

Assuming you get your SATs up, match for everything - really good shot at Stanford.

ECs are fantastic, the only thing worth considering is the fact that you don’t convey an interest in business or economics. Not sure if that could hurt you, though.

Chance me?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1294761-chance-me-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

OMG! Your ECs are beyond amazing. Just keep those grades up, and you should be good. By the way, could you PM me a link to your literary magazine? I’m interested in reading it. Thanks.

Chanced you back, fullofwonder. And thank you HobbitTon! PM’d ya.

Excellent ECs, but the class rigor is below par and your freshman year is really holding you back, so I’d have to contest that Brown is very much a reach for you (not considering your personal ties). On the bright side, if it means anything to you, a guy at a local high school who was a similarly excellent/recognized writer was accepted to Brown ED! No idea of his stats or anything. Ultimately, for all of the most selective colleges, it’s going to be a matter of how willing they are to look past your classes and GPA.

Thanks for your honesty  bump!

Your grades remind me so much of mine. I got mostly Bs freshmen year. Straight As all after that except 1 B 1 semester junior year. Honestly, your ECs are outstanding(nothing new obv). I’d be very surprised if you didn’t get in. You should consider applying to Yale because of its focus in theather. Chance me :)

I think you have a great application. But your course rigor and grades are well below par. Your SAT score is decent and moving it up will put you in the range. “Technically”, all those schools should be considered a little bit reachy, but I think you have a good shot to get into a few of them as you show great passion.

You are operating on a total myth that Brown cares more about character, or anything else, than it’s peer schools. Look at their common data set, it reflects that rank and scores are as central as at every other top school.

You are in an incredibly competitive pool coming from a CT private school. Typically you will encounter many hooked candidates- mostly legacies and recruited athletes. They will take up many of the seats allotted to your region.

Really work on the scores.

I’m a little bit confused based on the different reactions I am getting… do I have a fighting chance at Brown? I absolutely fell in love with it when I went to visit (I just got home).

…And bump.

This is actually amazing. Even though your freshman year scores were a little on the B side, you definitely brought it up with that beefy list of extracurriculars and talents. All in all, your stats put me to shame :). I’m an inexperienced “chancer”, but I thoroughly believe that you could easily get into Northwestern, Georgetown, Emory, and most likely Amherst. Go you!

Oh, and you’re applying to Brown ED? Call me biased because of the creative writing connection we’ve got going on here, but I truly believe you could get in–plus you’ve got some good connections that many people doubtlessly lack. You have no reason to be a “nervous junior”! You’ve got this!

I think you have a pretty good shot at Brown! While your sophomore year wasn’t too rigorous and your SATs are a little low, your ECs really are amazing!! Good Luck and thanks for responding to my thread!! :)

Hold up, is H for honors?

How top is your school? Are we talking Choate or Hopkins. At top prep schools, your counselor will have an excellent read of your chances. Much better than your fellow teenagers here.

It’s not that caliber I’d say, but it does send about a third of the class to top 20 schools every year

First off, your EC’s alone make you a strongstrongstrong competitor in the admissions process. Although I will agree that your grades could potentially bring your chances down, you really make yourself stand out with all of your impressive EC’s. Brown would be a good match, but as francesca1996 said, you might want to think about Yale. Their theater program is amazing. Also, they have one of the best male acapella groups in the nation. (Ever heard of da doox? :D) If you raise your SAT scores and try to maintain a solid grade average for the rest of junior/senior year, I think you have a really good chance of getting in to Brown. Good luck- and don’t be nervous! You’ll be accepted to a great school no matter what.

Chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1304596-chance-me-ill-chance-back.html</a></p>

I chanced you back, thanks for chancing me. I’m looking at Yale (it’s been in the back of my mind since the beginning), but the self-consciousness I’ve harbored about my grades has sort of prevented me from even letting myself look into it, haha.

Don’t be self-conscious! Your ECs really show your passion for everything you’re interested in. You have a really good chance anywhere. :]
