CHANCE ME for Brown??

Hi everyone! I ED’d (is that a verb now? lolz) to Brown for the class of 2020 and just wanted to know your opinions on my chances.

P.S. I realize I should take all responses with a grain of salt because, well, college admissions are pretty much crapshoots…but I’d really like to see if I have a shot at any of these!

Logistics:
School: extremely competitive, 2800 kids so pretty large, majority are white, area considered affluent
ACT: 36
SAT: 2220 (only took this for national merit stuff so not sending this in)
SAT II: Math 2: 800 Lit: 740
GPA: W: 4.7 UW: 3.85
Class rank: my school doesn’t rank, but I’d say I’m the top 8%?
AP: Chinese: 5 Euro: 4 Lang: 5 US: 5 Physics 1: 3 Calc BC: 5

This year’s schedule:

  • AP micro
  • constitutional law
  • AP chem
  • honors seminar writing
  • math topics (multivariable calculus)
  • AP computer science A
  • AP studio art

Race: 1st Gen Asian
Gender: Female
Potential major: Environmental engineering

Summer:

  • Internship with a mechanical and chemical engineering professor last summer, conducted my own experiment on the combustion of ethylene in fuel-rich conditions with a low-pressure shock tube, and wrote a paper on it
  • following summer I went to Costa Rica and did a lot of service there (50 hours in two weeks) and LOVED. IT.

ECs:

  • national merit semi-finalist
  • national art honors society, treasurer
  • varsity poms, Junior pommer coach (poms is like cheerleading but more focused on dance),
  • varsity member of forensics (speech team)
  • varsity badminton - went to state as a junior
  • peer leadership - committee member, attendance manager, committee chair
  • student council all four years
  • playing piano since I was 4 - AIM theory level 7 and technique level 10, taught myself guitar
  • created a volunteer group at our local nursing home to play biweekly repertoires of classical to modern music

Work:

  • tutor at Kumon
  • taught piano to neighbors’ kids

Essay:
Common app: pretty strong, talked about how I sat with a guy at lunch who used to sit by himself, and formed a friendship with him (sounds cheesy but I put a twist on it/inserted a bit of cultural criticism into it as well)
Supplementals: strong. I spent a lot of time on them and with each short answer I included anecdotes to show my character rather than blatantly state it.

Jeez that was long lol but THANK YOU (!!!) for taking your time to go through this post if you’re reading this now

I also RD’d to Swarthmore, Stanford, Tufts, and USC, and was wondering your opinions on those too!

Thank you!

oops also forgot to mention that I just had my Brown interview and it went really, really well. The Brown interviewer said he’d write me a really good review and that I was a great fit for Brown. We ended up interviewing for double the set 15 minutes given O.o

bump

bump!

I would say that you have a pretty good chance  While the GPA isn’t a 4.0, Brown surely does not average in that GPA and the ACT score (AMAZING JOB  ) will surely balance it out. The two subject tests are also pretty good as well. As long as you have some recommendations lined up and you work hard on ur essays, I think u r set

Can u chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1835410-chance-me-and-ill-chance-you.html#latest

@jackisawesome thanks for your input! yeah, my GPA isn’t the greatest, but my grades have consistently risen every year, going from a 4.3 freshman year to a 5.0 second semester junior year. I’ve heard upward trends are better than a higher GPA with a downward trend… what do you think? And of course!

Welcome to Tufts

@ClarinetDad16 haha what do you mean?

bump!

I think you have a good shot!

Brown: Low Reach
Stanford: High Reach
Swarthmore: WL
Tufts: WL
USC: Great chances

@patriots115 thanks! hope so. @20more thank you! it’s interesting that you put wait list at tufts and low reach for brown…why so? just wondering

bump!

Brown rejects 82% of valedictorians and more salutatorians. Remainder of top 10% gets rejected 92% of the time.

Tufts will welcome you with open arms and is a great school.

That is exciting

@ClarinetDad16 wow you’re really an advocate for tufts! haha
obviously my first choice is brown which is why I ED’d there but hopefully tufts will accept me if not brown.
Do you think I have a shot at brown though? decisions come out in a week! @-)

I think you have a solid chance, especially because of the volunteering stuff. I know people who’ve gotten into equal caliber ivies with less ecs. Chance back?http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1837466-stanford-mit-columbia-what-do-you-think.html#latest

@mvalen thank you for your input! hope so :o
and of course!

Do you have safeties? If not you should add one or two, you aren’t a lock for any of these schools.

Did you apply to the Brown-RISD program? That’s ridiculously competitive, but if your art is strong and you related it to your environmental engineering interest, you could stand out. Not many people have multivariable calculus, AP computer science, and AP studio art. Good job.
