Chance me for Columbia ED :)

F/"Other" Asian/Small Public School in Ohio
SAT I-- One sitting, Composite: 2240 Math: 770 Crit. Reading: 740 Writing: 730
SAT II-- US History: 710 Math II: 750 Chem: 660 (I know... my downfall.)
GPA: Weighted, 4.47
Rank: 6/300
Courses: All honors. 9 AP classes in total. Took AP Calc and Chem as junior, now in AP Stats online.
Notable E.C.'s:
President of Senate (all school government), VP of NHS, Founder of Philosophy Club, Marketing Director of a new city-wide service initiative backed by local university and city government (I'm technically on a city commission), Public Relations Exec. of city-wide youth philanthropy board that raises about $20,000 each year, Varsity softball and tennis player, Captain of debate team, play guitar & beatbox.
A lot of science awards at state/district level. JSHS 5th place, went to D.C. as Ohio delegate. I've done research at a plastics company, in a molecular bio lab, and currently am working with a pathology professor with Alzheimer's and a novel protein.
Volunteer: I basically volunteer every single week for my leadership programs. In the summer I'm at an Alzheimer's home taking care of residents.
Recs: Should be pretty good. My debate coach, psych teacher, and a teacher whose job I defended in front of the school board (don't think I'm their favorite person). Counselor is pretty tight with me.
Essay: My approach was definitely risky. Don't know if I pulled it off?

Hook: Leadership programs are pretty unique. Sibling legacy?

Interests: 1. Neuro 2. Philosophy 3. Gender Studies

My reflection:
My grades/test scores are probably my downfall. I could never get my essay to flow as well as I wanted it to; I hope it didn't come off sounding artificial. Darned Chemistry test... I'm going to take Lit in a month to try to get a higher subject test score. I love Columbia so much :')

I’ll chance back!

If you were coming from my school, I’d say you have a 90% chance, based on what I know about people who have been accepted in the past.

i know that a school’s reputation is really importance, so I’m not sure how you’re chances are looking. But as far as I can tell you seem to be a really strong candidate =)

You have very similar stats to one of my kids, who was accepted ED.

If there is one thing that you should know my friend, it’s that there really is no such thing as chancing qhwn it comes ro Ivy Leagues, it’s very unpredicatble. For example:

This ended up as a rejection. BUT…

Im not trying to scare you, but it’s true…its unpredictable.

(These two quotes are from topics here in CC for the '10 Columbia applicants)

this is so discouraging…

That wasn’t the point of my post. >_<

The point was that chance threads are bad because they may give over confidence to someone and be drastically shocked if he gets opposite his chances.

Or he may be very discouraged and may get very surprised (which would be a good scenario).

The point is that…you filled out the app…now just wait till December 15 or so…no point in “chancing”.

@Silence Yeah, I have the same views on chancing, but this is kind of a selfish way to try to give myself something to think about as I wait for December to come. I’m getting anxious already! Those two sets of stats that you pulled up are awfully strange, definitely evidence for my suspicion that admissions has a large component that is borderline random. Oh well. We will see in December–I won’t claim that I’ll be okay with not getting in, since it’s my dream school, but life goes on.

@Maneoc Thanks! I’ll pretend that you said 50% so I don’t feel too overconfident, though :stuck_out_tongue: As to the reputation of my school, my brother and another guy were accepted a couple of years back. Columbia takes a few of our kids, but I would say that my town is one that is hard to “get out of” in general.

@Sharpenedpencil Thank you for the feedback!

hey dude based off of your stats you seem to have essentially the same chance as any qualified person; from what i’ve read, your rejection would be based more off numbers than any lack of qualification. how did your stats compare against your brothers? your EC’s are pretty sick, so that will actually raise you above average in at least that category.
What do you think about my ED chances? I am rank 2 out of 260, I got a 2180, 2270, 2400 on my three SAT’s (in that order), and I have a 750 Chem SAT II and a 760 USH SAT II
I have 5’s on 5 AP tests, and i’m taking 5 more AP’s this year. I am captain of 2 vasity sports, and have won some minor awards and some other stuff
what do you think?

@cyanidic From your stats, you seem like a strong candidate  good luck! I’m going to be optimistic and say that you have a good chance of getting in. I certainly hope you pulled the essay off, I’m sure if all goes well the admissions officer reading it will enjoy. And I like the beatboxing, haha.

@Silence1113 Man, I feel bad for that Chinese-Pakistani chick…
