My unweighted ranking is kind of low (not top 10%)
But based purely on stats and extracurriculars, is there a good chance that I may be accepted to Cornell early or am I aiming too high? I’m applying to the engineering school if that helps.
Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 700 CR/ 800 Math/ 700 Writing (might retake for 2300+)
ACT: N/A
SAT II: Math II: 800, Physics: 760, Literature: 750
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.85/4.66
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 39/740 weighted, 98/740 unweighted
AP (place score in parenthesis): Stats (5), Calculus BC (5), awaiting results in 6 other AP tests
Senior Year Course Load: AP Literature, AP Spanish, AP Gov, AP Econ, Linear Algebra, Research Class
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Intel ISEF two-time finalist
Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Science Olympiad (secretary), Speech and Debate (publicist), a few other small ones with no leadership
Job/Work Experience: TA at Chinese School
Volunteer/Community service: Library (100 hours)
Summer Activities: Research Internship
Other
State (if domestic applicant): Mississippi
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public, highly competitive
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: F
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Legacy at Cornell
You seem like a very math oriented girl. Your test scores and EC awards are impressive. Your community service is a little weak, but its pretty decent. You have a higher chance than most applicants, but remember Cornell rejects perfect 2400 valedictorians every year.
Good luck
Are you applying ED? If so, I think you should be able to get in. You stats alone are at the Cornell level, if not better.
Being a legacy AND a finalist at ISEF combined are incredible hooks. I think it’s more likely that your weighted rank will be looked at, because unweighted rank is meaningless in terms of course rigor. So that puts you well into the top 10%.
I’d be surprised if you don’t get in.
Although I cannot say for sure that you will get in, I do believe that you have a very good shot at being accepted! Your Intel award and legacy do help a lot! Your 800 SAT math will also be noticed, especially because you’re a female applying for engineering.
Might be a little harder since college admissions is even more competitive with Asian applicants. Good Stats but nothing really stands out.
The Intel award is very impressive, especially since you’re a two-time finalist.
I’d say apply ED and you should basically get in, given that your essays are good as you have demonstrated outstanding achievement in the STEM area.
Thanks for the replies! I am applying Early Decision. Would it make a difference which engineering major I select? (Electrical Engineering vs. Computer Science vs. Environmental Engineering)
I think you have good stats but with schools like Cornell you never know. I’d say high match/low reach. In terms of admission, the best major (you should look at rankings for the school in those fields) is always going to be more competitive, but not too much, since they are all in engineering. Can you chance back please?
