Colleges of interest:
CSULB
CSUF
CAL POLY SLO
UC IRVINE
UC SANTA BARBARA
SDSU
UC DAVIS
UC SAN DIEGO
SAN JOSE STATE
Intended major: biomedical/ nursing science/informatics/kinesiology/cardiology
would I get into at least two of them?
I’m also in California…
CSULB/CSUF: Match
SDSU: Match (for Direct Admit Nursing a Low Reach)
UCI: High Match (unless you are trying for Direct admit nursing, then a Low Reach)
SLO/UCSB: Low Reach
Thank you!! Just a question tho, what is the difference between direct admit nursing and the alternative(if there is one)? I’m not quite familiar. @gumbymom
Bump…desperately need more than one opinion on this, please help
Most colleges with nursing schools require you to take two years of College General Education (nursing pre-req) and then apply for a position in their Nursing School with NO Guarantee that you will be admitted. As a direct admit, as long as you maintain a certain GPA while attending, you’re In the program.
SDSU/UCI offer direct admit Nursing programs, but to get an acceptance is super competitive. CSUF has a direct admit and a 2+2 program, so if you do not get into the direct admit program, you can go in as a Pre-Nursing major, take the pre-req’s and try applying again. Most CSU’s have the 2+2 programs and all are impacted.
Since you posted several majors are you planning to apply as a Nursing major or something related if Nursing is not available?
SJSU publishes their EI thresholds for each major and you can compare your EI to your intended majors:
EI= (CSU GPA x200) + (ACT comp x10)= 1050
http://info.sjsu.edu/web-dbgen/narr/static/admission/frosh-f2015impact.html
UCD: Low Reach
UCSD: Reach
For the UC’s, your GPA is low (below 4.0) so that will be an issue, however your ACT is very competitive. If you have some compelling reasons for your low GPA, these can be addressed in your UC essays which could help your chances.
If you are interested in a Nursing program, then I would try for the Direct admit programs…
Arizona State has a very good direct admit nursing program which may be of interest.
I have several in mind, because I haven’t decided what I wanted to do yet…I was thinking medical. Like physician assistant or some career that requires at most a masters. Goal college is SDSU, though.
@Gumbymom my EI for SAT is 4150 and for ACT is 1050…I was thinking to major in either informatics(health), microbiology, psychology, or possibly kinesiology(to become physical or occupational therapist)
I dont really know how to explain the 3.6 GPA(CSU Gpa) except that I took no honors courses sophomore year…I have ADHD and take meds regularly as well, but don’t know if this will affect my chances or influence the admissions people.
You have a good chance at SDSU if you keep up your grades and they have an excellent Pre-Professional advising center. Cal States do look at course rigor, but your EI’s look within range for SDSU/CSULB/SJSU and CSUF. Other than Biology, Psychology is probably the 2nd most applied major at these schools, just something to keep in mind.
Cal Poly SLO does not use EI but MCA points and I can PM you the explanation for the calculation if you want.
The UC’s are very focused on GPA with the average UC GPA at 4.0+ for all the campuses listed. UCSC/UCR are definitely within reach, but the others will be a much tougher admit, especially in the intended majors listed. Essays explaining your ADHD would help your chances, but this area is subjective and dependent upon how they will be viewed by admissions.
You have a good list of schools with some solid Match schools, some Reach schools but I would probably add one or safety schools such as your local Cal state.

I wish you good luck and keep me informed of your admission process.
@Gumbymom thank you! Just wondering, is kinesiology extremely popular at SDSU because I’m thinking of taking that as a major.
