My rank is not that great but I was hoping my scores and resume will make up for it. I have been stressing for a long time over my rank. I can’t get it out my head. I keep having nightmares that I’m going to check my UT EID in February and find a CAP offering on it. I worked really hard sophmore and junior year and I’m going to be really depressed if I get rejected just because I got a couple of B’s freshmen year. Should I send in my application ASAP? Or should I wait until I perfect my essays? I called admissions and the lady who answered said that they do not start reviewing applications until after December 1st, but I think she was lying to me. Anyone have any info on this?
Also my ethnicity is Arab/Asian (I think it says White/Asian on my transcript)
whoops i meant 92/864 not 92/964
Unless you are applying to an honors program, there isn’t much benefit in getting your application early. Well, you can get your place in the housing line earlier. OTOH, you don’t want to be one of those people coming on here later in the month because you are sweating your transcript, test scores, letters of recommendation not getting there on time. Your essays are already 8/10. Are they going to get that much better in a month?
Cockrell’s formula values writing over reading on the SAT so you have done a good job there. Being outside the top 10 percent is a real hurdle- not going to sugar coat it. The internship, will, look great. No one can accurately chance you but CAP seems most likely just because you rank will pull the AI formula down. You have to apply to find out. Sorry!
I hope you also apply at Texas A&M and UTD- both have great engineering programs as well if you are not interested in CAP.
@gettingschooled how do you know if that formula is still in use?
That is a great question. I don’t.
What I do know is the it was in use in 2008 because of the Fisher case and I know it was in use last year because of the Kroll report. While it is possible the formula changes over time, i don’t think they would have done away with it completely and I don’t think it would change dramatically.
You are going to have to apply to ever really know what your chances are. If you don’t and you just take my word for it or my educated guess, you’ll probably always wonder whether I was wrong.
@gettingschooled lol I remember I printed out the formula and showed it to an admissions counselor at the Houston Admissions Center and she said that she’d never seen that before. I literally talked to three separate counselors on three separate occasions about the formula and they all acted dumb.
Those counselors are there to get more people to apply so UT can have a better shot at racial and geographic diversity. They don’t have a role in admission decisions. They probably don’t really know about the formula because that isn’t their role. Knowing the formula doesn’t help anyone on the edge because individual years are more competitive than others.
You never know what they will see in your application that you and I don’t. I think the internship is key, but they may not. MITE may be a big deal to them. Just do the best job you can on your application so you know you gave it your best shot. Good luck!
