Chance me for ED GWU 2021

Looking to apply ED 1.

GPA UW: 3.600
GPA W: 3.87

ACT: 30 comp

APs Taken: World History (4), English Lang (3), French (2 - it was rough 11th grade) and U.S. History (3)
APs Taking Senior Year: Environmental Science, AP Gov w/Honors Eco, AP Eco w/Honors Gov, AP Lit, AP Comp Sci and AP AB Calculus

Comes out to a total of 10 APs upon graduation.

SAT - took it this month October 1st, waiting for results.
Subject Tests: World History (500s), U.S. History (600s), French (600s)

ECS:

  • Soccer 9th and 11th grade. Varsity during 11th.
  • Chess Club 9th - Present, currently Vice President. Placed 5th in 2015 county championship.
  • Yearbook Club 10th - Present.
  • National Honors Society
  • Key Club 10th - Present.
  • Volunteering at Brandywine Living at the Savoy - A senior home. ~150 hrs and counting.

Other Details:

  • No class/grade rank at my school.
  • Proficient in 4 languages - English, Mandarin, Cantonese, French. Can understand Spanish a bit.
  • Applying to the Elliot School, looking to major in International Relations and Affairs and a possible minor language.
  • Visited the GW campus, on the mailing list, occasionally emailed admissions department with questions, basically shown interest overall. QUESTION: Apparently they don’t offer interviews anymore? I would 100% go to D.C. to interview or schedule one with a local alumni.
  • Looking to study abroad or intern at the departments near GWU. And in the perfect world I would strive to be the ambassador of Hong Kong to the US (even though there isn’t one at the moment) or the ambassador of China to the US.

Essays and recs from teachers/counselor should be strong. Both teachers writing my recs have both taught me for 3 and 4 years respectively.

Demographics: Male, 17, fully Chinese. First generation immigrant from Hong Kong. Both parents did not graduate high school.

Questions about Financial Aid and such - I realize that GW is need-aware. And since my Parent 1 is currently unemployed and Parent 2 makes about $6000 a month, would applying ED:

  • Cause me to receive significantly less need-based aid?
  • Affect my chances at admission (since they don't want to give that much aid to a single student)

Sorry for the extremely long read! And thanks in advance!

NHuffer, if you read this, please give me feedback  seems like you are one of the most responsive and informative ones here…thanks again!

I think you’ll most certainly get in. Your stats are very good, plus it looks like you’ve done a good job showing interest in the school. As far as interviews, yeah- I’ve also heard they’re not doing them anymore. However, you can reach-out to a local Admissions Representative and perhaps do an interview that way: https://undergraduate.admissions.gwu.edu/admissions-representatives

As far as applying ED, I think that it will increase your odds at getting in (even though they are already very good). Its impact on financial aid, however, would probably be negative. I don’t have any first-hand knowledge of how that works, but it’s been stated on here several times by those that have been admitted ED. With that said, I don’t think it’d impact your aid by a large margin. If the amount of aid you receive is very important to you, then it might be beneficial to apply RD.

@NHuffer Thank you so much for the feedback!
