Chance me for Engineering at Carnegie Mellon (ED), UMich, Georgia Tech, UIUC, Purdue, Rutgers etc..

Right now I am a junior in high school and I really wanted to know my chances into getting into the engineering and computer science programs for colleges like Carnegie Mellon (ED), UMich, Georgia Tech, UIUC, Purdue, Rutgers, Virginia tech, NYU, UMD, UT Austin.

GPA: 3.75 (W) (expected at the completion of junior year)
GPA: 3.35 (UW) (expected at the completion of junior year)

GPA: 3.94(W) in time for regular decisions if colleges count the first semester of high school into GPA

Senior year AP : AP US Gov Pol, Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra, (AP weighted Business org), AP Environmental Science

Freshman - Junior year Honors and AP : AP Computer Science A, AP Calculus BC, AP Physics C, AP Statistics, Honors Computer Science 3

SAT II:
Math II - 800
Physics - 770

SAT: 2330 (Super Score) - 730 (CR) 800 (M) 800 (W)
ACT: 35 - Math(36) Science(36) Reading(34) Writing(34)

AP tests I have or will take:
AP Computer Science A - 4
AP Calculus BC - 5 (expected)
AP Physics C - 5 (Mechanics and E & M) (expected)
AP Statistics - 5 (expected)
AP Psychology - 5
AP Environmental Science - 5
AP Calculus AB - 4

Awards:
National AP Scholar (expected)

ECs:
President and founder of my schools Computer Science club
Vex Robotics for 2 years (our team went to world championships during my sophomore year)
This summer I'm going to be doing an engineering internship in my dads company
Volunteered at a preschool in india
Participated in a google coding competition
Track and Field
Did an internship at a consulting firm (not sure if helps for engineering)

Recommendations: I think i'll be getting pretty strong recommendation letters. I am going to get letters from my AP Physics C teacher and my Academic Global Studies teacher

Race/Gender: Indian/Male

*My grades show an pretty strong upward trend

Also thanks to anyone who comments on this thread!!

Assuming you’re a citizen…

Carnegie Mellon (ED) - High Reach (SCS is the most selective school - only 6% get in)… apply to CIT as your secondary choice and you may get in.
UMich - Reach
Georgia Tech - Reach (they became way more selective when they joined the Common App this year and rejected plenty of people with 2300+ scores)
UIUC - Low Reach (CS is competitive)
Purdue - Match
Rutgers - Match
Virginia tech - Low Match / Safety
NYU - Low Reach
UMD - Safety / Low Match
UT Austin - High Reach (They REALLY value GPA)

Your GPA really kills your application… do you have reasons for why it may have been low? (If you had 3.8+ UW then you’d have a MUCH better chance at a majority of these schools). Also no one can really chance you if you’re giving EXPECTED scores. It doesn’t work like that.

I agree with above that your GPA is way too low for top engineering schools although your test scores are great. Being an Asian male is another negative factor but you can’t change that. Your ACT score is just as good (or even slightly better) than your SAT superscore, so it is not an issue even for schools that do not superscore like UMich. You did not mention your home state which would affect your chances at some of these schools.

@Truust‌ - You’re right about Georgia Tech in the sense that they waitlisted many people with 2300’s and 35’s on the ACT. However, a majority of these applicants applied regular decision, thinking that GT would be a safety. However, if @king40867‌ applies early action, Georgia Tech would be a match. Also, UT really values class rank, not GPA.

Carnegie Mellon- Low reach
NYU- High match
UMich - High Match
Georgia Tech - High Match
UT Austin- High match (it’s hard to chance UT for OOS students)
UIUC - Low match/safety
Purdue - Safety
Rutgers - Safety
Virginia tech - Safety
UMD - Safety

The only thing that’s really holding you back is your GPA. If you have a good class rank, it will probably make up for it because it shows that your school is hard.

@Truust @billcsho‌ @May2013SAT‌ Thanks for chancing me!!
and @May2013SAT‌ my school doesn’t do class rank so hopefully thats gonna help me with colleges right?

@May2013SAT‌ I think what my school does is that in addition to sending my gpa they send the valedictorians gpa c

@billcsho I go to a blue ribbon school in New Jersey. So would that affect my chances for any of these schools?

^ Yes, you’ll probably get into Rutgers for sure (your stats are definitely competitive for the school anyways) since you’re in state - and you’ll also have to pay only in state tuition.

Is there any chance for me to get into a UC school for engineering like Berkley or UCLA? (assuming i write a good college essay)

Also would CMU CIT be a match for me if I ED there?

Cal’s College of Engineering is a big reach with your GPA. You’d have a better chance applying to L&S but even that’s really competitive (but less so)… obviously that’s not an option though if you don’t want to do a social science/CS. UCLA’s engineering school is likely easier to get into relatively, so apply if you can afford it. However, you really need to try to get your GPA up a lot since GPA is more important than SATs at the UCs (this may not be true by the time you apply due to the changes made on the SATs).

I’m not sure, but I don’t think it’s a match with your GPA. ED pool may have a higher acceptance rate, but it also usually has more competitive applicants as well.

What is your class rank? Being oos for these public schools would lower your chance. Is there any reason for the low GPA? Do you have a strong upward trend?

@billcsho‌ my school doesn’t rank student and I have a really strong upward trend. Also I don’t think this counts as an excuse but when I was in elementary school and middle school I switched through a lot of schools because I moved a lot so I had many gaps in my knowledge. I didn’t notice these gaps until highschool when math and other classes got harder so because of this I spent most of my freshman year studying old concepts, and while I was studying my grades would tank because I didn’t have as much time to study for tests.

^ Great. As you are getting excellent scores, I was thinking you either have a strong upward trend or your school has grade deflation. How is your uwGPA without freshmen grades? That would help you at some schools too.

@billcsho my UW GPA without freshmen grades becomes a 3.42

The GPA is the only thing holding you back a little. Other than that you’re golden.

I would suggest explaining the GPA in one way or another in the application. Maybe talk about why you had a rough start to highschool or how you’ve progressed academically.

Upward trend is definitely good tho compared to just constantly ehhh grades.

Overall I think you have a good shot IF you explain the GPA thing in the essay

Chance back pleaaassssee

My post was about a good shot at CMU***

Regarding your GPA. What is your class rank at your school and the top GPAs? Is it especially hard to get 4.0 at your school? If for example your valedictorian is going to graduate with a 3.4 UW, it changes everything about your college outlook. You seem to be a smart kid with outstanding test scores;

I have already asked for his class rank and OP said his school does not rank. Since the GPA without freshmen grade is still too low for UMich, that may be a problem there as UMich value GPA more than other school. Purdue should be a good match.
