Chance Me for Engineering

Hi, I will be a senior his fall and will be looking for engineering, specifically petroleum engineering but also possibly aerospace. I am a white male from a small high school.

Gpa: 3.48 unweighted
3.95 weighted
My school does not do Gpa so I had to calculate it myself.

Class Rank: Best I can get is an estimate. About 20-27 in a class of about 200ish, class size a little more I believe. Again all I could get is an Estimate.

SATs: 1790 overall, 590 math, 670 critical reading, 530 writing. 1260 cr and math.
They are bad, I know but was never good at standardized testing.

Classes: Three AP classes, APUSH, APES, AP Psychology.
Also took eight honors classes.

EC's/Awards
Golf team for three years so far.
Senator on student council for three years.
Community Service at my local library and church.
Church youth group.
Honor roll for all of high school.
Will be an AP scholar hopefully.

Black Belt in karate, been doing it for nine years.

Other things:
Hard of hearing student, wear full time hearing aids. Foreign languages and English has always been harder for me partly for this reason. Had to work hard in school to get decent grades and such as it can be hard for me to hear in the classroom.

I also live in CT if it matters.

Colleges: ( For petroleum engineering)

Louisiana State University
Colorado school of Mines
University of Alaska: Fairbanks
Texas A&M
Texas Tech
New Mexico Insitute of Mining and Technology

Other Schools:
Florida Insitute of Technology
Embry Riddle
WPI
RIT
Caly Poly
Harvey Mudd

I am going to ask you a question and please do not get offended…

Damn all of that, have you completed Pre-Calculus?

It’s basically the only question that matters as far as doing engineering. As long as you can complete in your first 2 years of college the following courses:

Calculus I
Calculus III
Calculus III
Linear Algebra
Differential Equations
Physics I (mechanics)
Physics II (electricity/magnetism)
…and probably some Chemistry (because you mention Petroleum)

…with a 3.0+ GPA

THAT WILL decide if you will be an engineering student

Yes I have completed pre- calc my junior year and will be taking calculus as a senior.

You should OK for engineering.

Can anyone asses my chances of getting into the above schools?

I don’t know a lot about all the other schools but I know harvey mudd’s like a super genious school. The 1790 sat and only 3 APs are really gonna slim down your chances there. Plus, tho your 3.48 gpa is really good, I think they look for a bit higher. And the math sat is def the most important section you’re gonna wanna focus on. I know where you’re coming from though, I HATED standardized testing. So glad I dont have to take that awful sat anymore. Have you tried the act? I’ve heard it’s easier tho I never took it myself.
And just outta sheer curiousity, y u no apply to georgia tech?

Oh and you’re gonna wanna try to get at least AP calc AB in there brobro, and try for an AP science as well (bio, chem, physics B/C). APES is a science but most colleges don’t really care about it. I think if you really really like math you’ll be good for engineering but with a low math sat and no AP calc you’re gonna have a real tough time getting into those top colleges man…

With the demand for petroleum engineers, the OP can attend East Northwest Southern State University and get a job.

Some of those colleges I just wanted to gauge my chance, more interested in ones offering petroleum engineering. I will also be taking the ACT in the fall, and should do well on it, only part that would be harder would be writing.

Also does the fact I wear full time hearing aids help me at all, I don’t think it would unless for an essay, but just wondering.

Yeah, most people are not too familiar with those schools. I would say no chance at Harvey Mudd. They are looking for top applicants. But for the rest, you should look up there common data set and see where you are for the SAT and GPA. If you are above 75%, you should be good. Above 50%, and you have a decent shot. Above 25% is a reach but still worth applying. Lower than that is probably not gonna happen.

Does anyone have any ideas about the schools?

I would add West Virginia University to the list.

Any ideas about the schools?

We’ve been through the process with my kid and know a lot about some of the schools you mention and the stats you will need. Test scores are very important and your SAT’s will be a drag on your application. Take the ACT instead and hire a professional tutor that has a stellar reputation of success. Do what they tell you to do and begin now and get the ACT done prior to application time. Take two SAT subject tests as well with Math being one of them. Use the same tutor/service to help you. My kid had poor scores as well, but improved his scores significantly using the strategy above. For example, ACT English went from 25 to 34 and SAT2 Math went from 690 to 780. He got into most of the engineering schools he wanted and picked his first choice.

Colleges: ( For petroleum engineering)

Louisiana State University – No idea
Colorado school of Mines – Low Reach
University of Alaska: Fairbanks – No idea
Texas A&M – Reach
Texas Tech – No idea
New Mexico Insitute of Mining and Technology – No Idea

Other Schools:
Florida Insitute of Technology – No Idea
Embry Riddle – Low Reach
WPI – High Reach
RIT – Reach

Cal Poly SLO – High Reach (No petroleum engineering offered. Aerospace was voted the number one program in the US by Aero recruiters.)

Harvey Mudd – Extreme reach, I would not bother to apply. They accept only the top applicants and pick at the level of MIT and Cal Tech.

A school that I seriously recommend is Cal Poly Pomona. In California, there are two Cal Polys. My son goes to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and for that program you have to have significantly higher stats than you have. Additionally, no petroleum engineering.

However, Cal Poly Pomona [Future Students | Cal Poly Pomona](http://cpp4me.csupomona.edu/) has both majors (i.e. Chemical & Materials Engineering and Aerospace Engineering – CME includes petroleum/fuels as well) http://www.csupomona.edu/~engineering/programs.htm

Your stats as they are can get you in at CPP too. However, I would still take the ACT. CPP does NOT require SAT2 exams. It is very reasonable in price for out of state students and located in Los Angeles where Aero and Petrol companies abound. There will be many opportunities for internships and if you want grad school, many kids go on to USC or other great programs from Cal Poly Pomona. Check it out. CPP could be your best bet.
