Chance me for Exeter, Andover, and Deerfield?

Hi :) Just another 'Chance Me' Thread. Thanks :)

I'm an Asian Girl, bilingual in English and Chinese. I'm currently a high school freshman and applying for 10th Grade to Phillips Exeter Academy, Phillips Academy Andover, and Deerfield. I'm thinking of applying to like, 2 more. I looked at Choate -- not sure if it's the school for me though.
Anyway, I'd just like to know my honest chances, so I don't have my hopes too high or anything. I understand that the schools are extremely selective in admissions.

My grades are generally in the A range (A-'s to A+'s), and my GPA is above a 95 (is that a 4.0 GPA?). I get the occasional B every now and then, and if I'm really having a rough day (i.e., I'm not feeling good or something), a C. But that's extremely, extremely rare.

I'm in all honors/accelerated classes, my math class is a class specifically designed for those who love challenging math and demonstrate a high level of ability, so it's higher than honors. The course is Algebra II/Trigonometry.

Math: A-, 90 (More challenging and rigorous curriculum than regular honors -- do the schools acknowledge that?)
English: A+, 98
AP World: A, 95
Biology: A, 93
Spanish: A+, 100 (I have a knack for foreign languages)

My grades are kind of meh-ish, I know, but I hope my EC's/Essays make up for it.
I have yet to take the SSAT.

Extracurriculars: (in no order of importance except for the first few)

Piano, 9 years
Cello, 5 years
Science Olympiad, Division B -- 3 years, Varsity Team and Captain of team that placed 3rd in State for the past couple years.
Foreign Language Study -- I'm currently studying Russian and Spanish on my own at home. Chinese ongoing.
Math Teams, 3 years. Team one first place in Math Competition in October.
Jazz Band, 1 year. By Audition, keyboardist.
Chamber Orchestra: 3 years, 3rd chair cellist.
Community Service, 4-5ish years.
Newspaper Club, 1 year: I just write articles
National Junior Honor Society
Christian Youth Group, 3 years
Drawing/Painting/Art, 3 years

Awards/Achievements: (Not many, but a few)
2nd Place in School Spelling Bee
Composition piece selected to be performed somewhere (I'd rather not say where -- just for privacy reasons)
Nominated for county orchestra
Accepted in Chamber Orchestra/National Junior Honor Society/School Varsity Team for SciOly/Jazz Band
Captain for SciOly, as aforementioned
Math Team first place in county in October competition.
And then other achievements -- I'm not sure if I should include them, are like, team achievements/orchestra achievements. Probably not, right?

I think that's basically it. My Awards/Achievements are kind of meh-ish too :/

I think that's it for EC's. I'm kind of athletically challenged -- I mean, I'm okay, but I could never be competitive in athletics. Although I love to figure skate, if that counts for anything. Not really an EC anymore -- it used to be -- but I like to visit the rink every once in awhile.

As already mentioned, I haven't taken the SSAT's yet but I feel semi-confident about it. I bought a practice book and I've been doing relatively well -- almost full score on the math questions, with the exception of a few. I'm really just concerned about the SSAT essays -- I'm not too great with generating essays in a very limited amount of time.

My essays for the schools should come out relatively well -- I understand that it's ideal to nail those, and the interview as well. I'm not too concerned about the interview though -- I'm hoping it'll go okay. I'm a big people-person.

As of teacher recs, well, I know I should have a lot of great personal recs. I think my English and Math teachers will give me pretty good recs :) I don't know about the school official one, though. I can only hope, but she was really nice about it when I talked to her.

Basically, I really really really want to be able to go to these schools. Exeter and Andover are, as of right now, tied as my first choice, but Deerfield would be excellent too. :)

But yes, that's all. So can someone chance me? Thank you so much!! :) I'd love an honest evaluation, and where I could improve, etc. I feel extremely iffy, mostly because of my grades and then when I look on other chance threads for these schools.. some have amazing stats.
So I'd just like to know -- do I have a chance? I'd need to apply for FA too..

Thanks so much!

id say u have an 80% chance jus cuz u dont know ur recs for sure and havnt done the ssats yet neither the essays but yyaaaaa i get simalar grades and im applying to 9th cuz i have also done 7 years in spanish. haha random, anyways interviews are key

Wow, haha! That’s a lot higher than I ever expected anyone would chance me. Which school(s) are you applying to?
Anyway – thanks so much! Good luck in your admission process!! (Do you need me to chance you or something?)

Bump :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyone else want to chance me? :/

I think that you have a pretty good shot at the schools you are applying to. In my opinion, if you get anything at or above the 90th percentile on all three of your SSAT sections you will have about an 80-90% chance on getting in. Bottom line is that you seem like a strong student. Good luck!:)

Thanks so much, for chancing me and for your opinion! Haha, seems like I’m a lot more skeptical about my chances than other people are. But I guess that’s a good thing, right?

Good luck to you too, ArtsyGal88! :)

…Bump? :/

i just did my interview (for exeter)and i think that i did a decent job although im pretty hard on myself i guese cuz my mom said i did an excellent job. My grade this year for first quarter were all A’s except my B plus in writing at 92%( was sooooo annoyed by that).SSATs were scary at first but now they seem like they will be easy. I got a copy of my rec for extra curr.(student government) and it was fantastic. I got 4 x’s in the top few encounterd box’s the other 2 in top 10 this year and a whole page talking about how resiliant, strong in charector, and grounded i am. Dont know what the other recs say but hopefully there just as good. I am known for writing strong essays. also i have 5 extra curr. : cheerleading(2 years), student government(2 years), track(4 years), ballet(1 year), and piano(8 years). honors and higher each quarter since 6th when started using letter grades.( higher= cum laude 5 out of 9 quarters). Idk if this helps but my school is a charector award winning school. also at the high school fair the rep for exeter said there looking for people in the midwest. Plz respond also I know theres a ton of spelling errors i was rushing. Im currently only applying to exeter if you have any other suggestions for BS plz tell me Im looking for one more choice to boost chances of going to a new england bording school. Also i need FULL FA.

Well…I screwed over the SSAT’s big time.
I think.
I omitted a lot of questions (like, 14 or something…). I think it was unusually hard – I did a lot better on the practice tests I took. And it’s not even like I didn’t study – I did! I did really well on my practice tests – like 90% the first time around.

Does that really mess me up? D:

i feel like i messed up 2… but can you please chance me for exeter

Oh, sorry! I will chance you now.

It seems like you have a pretty good chance, but keep in mind that a large percentage of their students are also very qualified. I’m glad you have great recommendations! Those will definitely help! And having a good interview is also definitely a big big plus.
You don’t have a lot of extracurriculars, though. But your grades are good, which might compensate for the extracurriculars.

How did you do on your SSAT? How are your essays?
And I think they like the fact that you’re from the midwest.

But yes, I think you have a decent chance to get in! Good luck with the rest of your application process!

I got a 50% on the ssats im going to retake was realy nervous. essays are done are look great and jw how is 5 extra curricullers not enough alos the only foriegn languege i know is spanish
