Chance me for Georgia Tech 2024

Hi, I think I’m a long shot for acceptance but I just wanted to hear some feedback. I am trying to major in Civil Engineering. I’m out of state from an unranking school. I have a 100.5 weighted GPA with all honors and APs. I have taken all of the dual-enrollment college engineering classes my school offers. Also I am in AP BC Calc and AP Physics C this year, with all advanced math and science in previous years. I’m a member of NHS, Mu Alpha Theta, and National Language Honor society. Also I’m in two community service clubs and I’m an officer for one of them. My standardized test scores aren’t too good with a 28 on the ACT with a 30 on the math. I have had a few jobs also while in high school. Lastly I took part in multiple college summer programs, not at Georgia Tech though. Please let me know what you think my chances are as I applied early action. Thanks

I think GT requires SAT subject tests also.

I just looked it up and it said it wasn’t required.

GT compares applications regionally. Your app will compete with others from your area and school. Out of state admit rate for GT is 20%.

Out-of-State admit rate for GT is actually about 13%, with engineering and CS the hardest to get into. Getting more competitive with each passing year. If you are looking for an honest answer, I would say your chances are about nil. Those stats frankly couldn’t get you in even if you were an in-state applicant, IMHO. I know a top student from a very highly regarded Northeast school district who was denied with a 35 ACT and much better ECs, and another from a neighboring district who was the school’s only National Merit scholar, also denied. Read through the discussions on this site and others and the accept/denied stats others have posted and you will see what it takes to get in to GT. The 28 on the ACT is really bad for this school, sorry to say. Also, I wouldn’t even put your membership in NHS, Mu Alpha Theta, and National Language Honor society on your application. Those groups admit many students with minimal qualifications and if you’ve got nothing better to put on an application, you are clearly reaching and appear desperate. Your pluses are the types of courses you are taking/have taken, your GPA, and the fact that you have some work experience. Any significant clubs or leadership positions within them? Sports (varsity, recognition, team captain etc would be preferred)? Music?

What is your unweighted gpa?

I am not going be as pessimistic as WhrlingColleges but he is right that OOS acceptance rate is lower than 20%. I have seen 2 numbers this past admissions cycle 14.9% and then 16% which my have been after wait-list acceptances. Either one is very tough. Good news is that GT places GPA, rigor, and ECs above standardized tests in importance for admissions. Bad news is that your scores would only be in the 25% range of admitted students from the previous (2018) admissions class. So people made it in with your scores, but not many. S19 was accepted last year OOS for Chemical Engineering with only a 1410 SAT, but his Math score was near 75th%. He had a top GPA, excellent rigor, and ECs that ranged from NASA research to award winning vocalist. It will depend on how they view your rigor and ECs. Also my son put down his honor societies like NHS and Tri-M on his application. I see no issue putting that down as long as you have other ECs that show dedication and service.

According to GT they don’t accept by major and to prove that they allow all admitted students to change their major to any one that want before even getting to school.

One thing to consider if you do happened to get deferred EA that GT will allow you to send in updated scores for RD so it would not hurt to try and improve your scores (especially math) at this point.

@racereer thanks for that and my unweighted is about a 95.8

Also while SAT subject tests are not required they are considered if submitted, so a good Math subject test score would be helpful. You actually still have the ability to take another test (regular or subject) and it still be considered for EA. GT accepts test scores from the late Oct ACT and early Nov. SAT date for EA consideration. I would see no harm in trying to improve your scores if possible.
