Chance me for Honors/Merit Scholarships too! (I know it’s a long shot)
Solid, but nothing is for sure in college admissions. What is your class rigor like? This is one of the most important things for GT. Done any research?
I did all honors my freshman year, 5 APs my sophomore year, and full time dual enrollment my junior and senior year. I haven’t done any research
Hi! I’m from the class of 2023. I was the only one who got into GT from my school (620 seniors) I can definitely say GT is looking for more than just stats and interest in STEM for their admissions. There were people with higher stats and in more advanced math and science classes than I was, but I was admitted (I think lol) because of my extracurriculars, IB diploma, and my essays. GT is becoming more selective (OOS: 14%) and they are looking for candidates that are not only good STEM students, but good people in general. Keep that in mind when you’re applying. Hope this helped (:
Very much agree with @kjoneno DS does not have perfect test scores and GPA (though still very close to perfect) and he got accepted as OOS which we felt very lucky. From what he sees, he feels his essay showed that he is interested in the major (BME) and has been doing research on GT’s program
Good Luck to you.
Honors is a strange thing at GT…You don’t apply until after you are admitted, and then it is part of the housing application into the Honors LLC. They only take 100 students/class. Supposedly GT thinks of all of their students as “honors” quality, so the advantages that are typically considered honors (undergrad research, access to internships, etc) are accessible to everyone. Ultimately my D19 wasn’t feeling the vibe with GT and declined her acceptance.
Be careful with Honors and the other LLCs. They can be great for some people, but you should really put in your research before committing to them.
My kid got picked as part of the Honors LLC—in May of the year of admission (so obviously she was a fill in when someone didn’t come). It’s a community of kids and GT seems to even the kids out over many different majors. It’s an eclectic mix of interesting kids. Meeting the kids, I don’t feel it’s like the “best of the best” or anything. She liked the kids she lived with (which was the most important thing to us about it and she maintained connections with these kids throughout college)—but I know folks who did Grand Challenges and loved it too. We felt very honored when she was selected—but honestly, I really wouldn’t sweat it if your kid wasn’t. Given the caliber of students at GT these days, it seems like just another LLC option.
My son got waitlisted for honors, and then applied again after the freshman year at GaTech, only because he wanted to live with some friends at Cresine Apartments for sophomore, junior and senior year. He likes Cresine location a lot. . All honors is , is a living group, and non honors students can enroll in very small honors math classes. The only reason to apply to honors at GaTech is if you want to live in the newer suite style apartments, Cresine, on the west side of campus near the athletic center and swimming pool. Note this is a long walk to Tech Square and the Publix food shopping but there are busses. Many many straight A students at GaTech do NOT live in Cresine, so its just not a big deal, to get into Honors at GaTech and freshman year is really identical, except for a freshman honors dorm, that really does nothing for the student.
Note there are some floors of non honors students in Cresine and the surrounding apartments on the west side, of campus, so I see nothing special about honors. You may be required to take a small humanities class in freshman year if you do honors, its not about technical classes, just a living group, a dorm, for freshman year.
Grand Challenges living group is very selective and that program is more of a team building exercise. Students pick a social problem to work on in groups of 3-6 freshman. GaTech doubled the size of Grand Challenges in recent years. Again, its a living and social group, not really an academic program. Grand Challenges will require a group presentation, but it does not take a ton of time, but the student needs to apply with essays, so that can stress out newly admitted freshman , to get a big old reject from Grand Challenges, or a waitlist and then never get into that program.
Is it really worth it to write more essays after you get into GaTech and decide to attend just to live in an "elite " Grand Challenges dorm for nine months? You will have to decide that.
@dreamer000 There are only GaTech 40 merit scholarships for all out of state students. Since you are from Florida, unless your parents are veterans, be prepared to pay the full cash out of state tuition, arguably a great deal compared to say MIT, Duke Etc.
You can win a great award at U of Florida Gainesville, I bet so apply there too.
You can go to U of Central Florida for free, and other public programs in Florida will be great deals for you.
Georgia in state students can win Zell Miller scholarships to GaTech that cover the full in state tuition. Florida students must pay full out of state tuition, along with all other out of state students.
Its not practical to gain Georgia Residency so don’t go down that road.
Decent chacnes, OOS is rough. What part of Florida are you from? My school has a big MAO chapter
