Chance me for Georgia Tech and Duke Please??

Ok so Im a black female pursuing a civil engineering degree. Im a senior in high school and I'll try to keep this brief.

SAT 2010
ACT : Awaiting scores but im guessing around a 30

GPA 4.265
(my school does +.5 for honors and +1 for APs

Im around the top 5% in my class. Probably slightly higher

Honors classes
Biology
Alegbra I and II
World history
English(all 4 years)
Geometry
Precalculus
Physics

AP classes
World History
US History
Government
Physics C
Environmental Science
Micro and Macro Economics
Calculus BC

I have TONS of extracurriculurs but here are some leadership positions
3years of volleyball (captain)
Black Student Union (Founder and Officer)
Model United Nations (Officer)
Math Honor Society (Officer)

I've also been a volunteer volleyball coach for 3 years and I had an internship this summer.

I know Duke is a reach but their civil engineering program is really small (due to lack of interest not competitiveness) and I was hoping that could give me a leg up. Also being an URM but I dont think it will make a huge difference.

Edit For my SAT: CR: 610 M: 750 W: 650
I know reading is pretty low but I want to go into a STEM field so I hope that makes up for it

umm idk about duke but for ga tech…all of my friends applying for engineering have at least 2200 with stellar gpas…and are very worried they will not get in

Georgia Tech you have a shot, but duke is questionable but because its not a popular major it’s possible http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1596424-chances-nyu-ucb-brandeis-bu.html</a></p>

Your GPA and scores are solid. You may have trouble getting into Duke just b/c it’s hard if you’re out of state to get in there w/o being a recruited athlete. GA tech seems legit for you. Being a URM with that strong backing will look legit as well

i think you have a solid shot at Georgia Tech, Duke is a low reach

Your SAT scores look about average for Georgia Tech (Math scores a little higher, so that’s good). You are very involved and you’re in many clubs and you have a fantastic GPA. I feel that GA Tech is a match, but I’m not sure about Duke since I have not really looked into them. Your stats look great, so I wouldn’t see why you wouldn’t get accepted to Duke.

@Socoengineer Duke is a reach, GA Tech is a match.

Chance me back http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1594388-will-transfer-better-school-help-me-get-into-my-top-schools-ea.html</a></p>

It depends on your essay now. You have to remember, Duke does Holistic evaluation, so as long as your recs are great, it would all ride on your essay(though i don’t know what the average SAT score is for Duke). As for Georgia Tech- Match

ACT: 33 C
SAT: 2220 (1530 M/CR)
GPA: 4.3 W 3.3-3.5 UW (Can’t remember exact)
Class Rank: Top 20%

High School Courses: 10 AP, IB Diploma Candidate, total of 4 non-honors courses, as well as extra courses before school, and after school fine-arts credit

Extracurricular: Academic Team Captain (12th, numerous awards as well at state level)
At time of Apps, finishing Eagle Scout (explained my project to show I was almost done) (6 years in BSA, Senior Patrol Leader, multiple significant leadership roles, Order of the Arrow (BSA Honors Society))
Forensics - gained enough NFL points for rank of Distinction
Youth Red Cross - Significant time spent planning events, and executing them
Cultural Dance - Choreographed and led 12th, choreographed since 9th, doing since 4th
NHS, Interact Clubs.
Cello- Part of prestigious local Youth Orchestra (difficult to get in, member from 9th -11th)
Martial Arts - Instructor in one type, learned a second type as well
Founding member of Breakdancing and German Clubs (president of German)
Member of school’s robotics and programming team

Volunteer: 400+ Hours (150 for IB CAS)

Ethnicity: Did not specify
Gender: Male
Income: no FA
State: SC
School: Small Public (>150 students in graduating class)

Essays: Amazing (I write really well)
Recommendations: Amazing (One from AP/IB Physics, One from AP/IB Chem, one from AP/IB English)

Applied: Georgia Tech(stretch, for Industrial Engineering), University of South Carolina(both stretch(honors) and fallback, for International Business and GSCOM), Clemson (Fallback for Engineering, non-specific)

Accepted:
USC-Honors(Significant Financial aid) Clemson(Significant financial aid)

Thoughts:
I was originally planning to apply to other colleges, such as UMich but decided against it after getting into USC honors(found out mid December). It is ranked number one both for the honors program, and for International Business (one of my majors, and guaranteed spot for Honors students), cheap, and nearby so I didn’t feel the need to apply to schools that would be more expensive and not worth the trouble. Also, USC has a selective program that lets me spend two years in Hong Kong, an opportunity that couldn’t be matched anywhere else, so I’m quite happy with my results. To be honest I’m surprised I got into either program, as the average student has a significantly higher GPA (UW) than mine.
(Btw, the USC app was killer, 8 essay supplement for Honors!!!)
On Clemson and G-Tech:
Clemson has a good program (got into Honors as well) but it would of been a VERY bad fit for me as business was my main passion. Similarly, G-Tech has a very demanding curriculum for Industrial Engineering, and I most likely would of gotten bored.

i just found that…THAT is not mine

Lol its all good

I think you’ll most likely get into GA tech. Duke can be a total crapshoot for anyone, I have a friend who got into Stanford and Cornell engineering but got rejected by Duke. I still think you have a chance though, especially being a minority female.

Reach for Duke, High Match for Georgia Tech (ethnicity and gender definitely helps, I think)

Did you submit ACT or SAT? Your SAT is somewhat low for those schools, but it sounds like your ACT score may be higher than SAT (if you think it’s around 30), so that may not be so much of a problem. Also, do you know your unweighted GPA? It’s hard for me to judge based on weighted (since it varies a lot), but based on your class rank, I’d say you’re probably within range.

Georgia Tech is probably a high match (I would say match, but test scores may make it somewhat difficult)
Duke really likes leadership, and if your essay is also good, these things could really help to make up for your lower test scores. At the same time, it’s really a bit of a random draw since so many Duke applicants are very highly qualified, so I’d say that it’s between a low reach and reach.

@oboesapien my UW GPA is a 3.96 and I attend a very competitive high school. Should i send my AP scores as well? I got a 5 on ap us history and world history and a 4 in Ap environmental science. Only 5% of kids who took the ap world test in 2012 got a 5. Do you think this could improve my chances?

That’s a great GPA, and that’ll probably be a major positive for your application- and the fact that you have a tough curriculum is a huge plus.
I don’t know very much about AP, but I would definitely recommend sending the scores- I’m not sure how much it’ll help, but it definitely won’t hurt your application- and I’d guess that’ll help significantly.

Thank you so much for your input!

Bump bump bump

AP scores don’t really factor into admissions, but those scores can only help.
