Chance me for H and Y

I'm in the middle of the college process right now and want to see how you all think I stack up. I realize that these schools are a crap-shoot even with the best qualifications, but any analysis/suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

About me:
White male
Junior at a prestigious school in Philadelphia
I want to apply as a Chemistry, Biochemistry or Chemical Engineering Major, Minor in Spanish

Stats:
SATs:
710 Math
740 Reading
710 Writing

so 1450/1600 and 2160/2400

I've only taken them once with no prep, so I think I can bring up the Math and Writing scores

SAT Subject Tests:
Spanish: I'm doing the practice tests and getting 2 wrong on the entire thing so projected 780-800
Chem: proj: 750-800
Math II: have yet to start prep, but I do well in Math

Grades: 4.0 (our school doesn't weight)
Advanced Classes:
Advanced Alg II Freshman Year
Advanced Geometry & Chem Sophomore Year
Double-Adv Precalc (Trig, Precalc, and Calc A) Junior year
Adv Span 4 (Pre-AP) Junior year
AP Chem Junior year

Next Year I plan on forgoing History to take:
Adv Physics
AP Bio
AP Spanish
AP Calc BC
Reg English (no adv at my school)
Bioethics (1 trimester elective)

I'm trying to challenge myself to the max even if that makes me get an A-

Recs: not yet completed but I'm really close to my teaches and they can and will write very well for me

Summers: Freshman - Spanish language immersion trip
Sophomore - Cooking Classes
Junior - Cultural exchange trip to Australia, Water polo camp

Job: Bus boy for most of Sophomore Year

ECs: Football - Freshman Year
Lax - freshman Year

Water - polo Junior, Senior Year
Musical - Soph, Junior, Senior Year
Chorus - All 4 years (leadership next year)
Spanish Club - All 4 years (probably leadership next Year)
Literary Magazine - Soph, Junior, Senior (leadership next year)
Current Events club - soph, junior, senior year
Boys A Capella Group - Junior, Senior (poss. leadership next year)

Application stuff:

Essays: I am generally a good writer, and I plan to start over the summer so they will be well edited and not rushed.

I plan to interview at any and all schools that I can. I am generally very personable and can most likely make a good impression

No Legacy

Anyone? I will chance you back.

Obviously as you know they are both reaches.

But, ya…improve your SAT and make sure you get those leadership position (plus improving ECs never hurts)

Chance me?

You GPA is good and if you manage to retake your SATs and score 2200+ that will be good also.
Scoring well on your SAT II will also be beneficial
It doesn’t seem like their is much to make you stand out but keep your 4.0 and clubs and you should have a good shot although they are high reaches.

I also forgot: National Spanish Exam Gold freshman and soph, silver/gold junior year (I know my % but not my medal)

I’m starting to tutor in spanish this year and I commonly tutor my friends with mat if that counts for anything

All right, how about these schools also:

NYU
JHU
CMU
MIT
Stanford
Brown
Georgetown
Duke

I’m lucky enough to go to a feeder school for UPenn (like 15-20 accepted every year) and my mom went there :)

Your best shot by far will be Penn as a legacy, but you have to apply ED to get the boost. I would still try to raise SAT scores for a really good shot.

Good shot, but focus your ECs dont just do everything

yeah, i agree. I think that, while i am a technical person, I really enjoy the arts outside of the classroom. I do sports because a) I love exercising and being fit b) I love the team aspect and c) we are required to. As for the other clubs, they are more of a hobby than a full-on EC. In reality, my ECs are heavily arts-oriented (LItMag, Chorus, A Capella, Musical). Also, at this point, I’m not sure if there’s much I can change in order to retain consistency in my ECs.

Good shot; if I were you I wouldn’t include football and lacrosse in your list of ECs because you only did them for one year, and you have plenty of other activities where you show a lot of commitment/leadership.
Obviously, Harvard/Yale are a crapshoot as you said, but as long as you bring your SAT scores up, you should have as good a chance as any :)

yeah… i think they ask you to list the in order of importance so i figured i’d just leave them off. Thanks and good luck swimstar!

dude try as much as you can to get that SAT up to a 2300 which is the average the H+Y

Yeah. I’m taking them again in October and will definitely be able to bring up Math and Writing (and maybe CR a little), as I plan to spend my summer preparing (not excessively, just a little bit each week that will add up to a lot of preparation).
