Hi I am a junior. Please chance me for HYPSM, Caltech, Northwestern, Rice and I'll chance back :)

• Volunteer/Community Service: 60+ hrs at charity clinic, 80+ hrs tutoring
• Summer Experience: hardcore drumming/research
• Essays: will focus on my passion for percussion, maybe some stuff about math, research, or volunteering

Other

• School Type: Public
• Ethnicity: Korean -_-
• Gender: M
• Income Bracket Range: High
• Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): none

Your statistics (GPA, test scores etc) are quite good. Your extracurriculars are good as well (especially RSI and the math competitions). Perhaps try to engage in research, international olympiads (you already went to the USA(J)MO. It also appears to me that you have taken some of the more difficult classes, which is good. I think your chances for Harvard University, Yale University, Princeton University, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and CalTech are good. For the others, I think your chances are very good. Good luck!

I agree, your chances for HYPSM are good, and all of the others should be matches. IMHO, your essay topic sounds a bit weak. Maybe you can make it work, but it seems kind of generic.

Thanks. I’ve actually done some really cool things with percussion apart from just the school and all-state bands like playing multicultural drums like the bongo, playing in some concerts internationally, etc. so hopefully I can make it work!

Considering your GPA and your SAT literally cannot get any better, focus on the other parts of your application like EC’s and your essays. Start thinking about essay topics and other clubs or activities you could do that will help the schools understand the type of person you are. You’ll likely get into at least some schools in HYPSM… Northwestern and Rice seem like matches.

GPA, SAT, and awards are great, but the EC’s are lacking. You have as good a shot at HYPSM as anyone else, but then again, at that level it’s just a crap shoot. Caltech, Rice, and Northwestern should definitely all be matches.
