But there's only going forward now. I realize that essays and letters of recommendation can also hold considerable weight, but please make your best judgment based on the information provided.

Thanks! I'll chance back, just post your thread!

Anyone? I’ll chance back!

Asian male from California

Reaches: HYP, Columbia, Penn, Dartmouth, Stanford
Reaches but good chances at Cornell, Brown, Northwestern,JHU and Rice

USC: I think you will get accepted

What about some LACs such as Middlebury and Carleton?
What about Vanderbilt? You should add U Chicago!

Long list of unrelated EC’s+Asian= admissions death.

Academically you sound a an OUTSTANDING STUDENT! The problem is there are alot of outstanding students who apply to the ivy league schools, so what you need to focus on is your essay. I think you have a pretty high chance of getting into JHU. GOOD LUCK!!

Thanks for the input guys!

Yeah, I realize that my ECs lack focus, but I felt that high school was a time to try a bunch of things, find out what I liked, what I didn’t like. The result? I like a lot of stuff! It’ll probably hurt me during the admissions process, but it’s fine by me. I’ve found my true calling and undergrad - wherever it may be - will be the perfect time to start going in that direction.

Anyways, I appreciate the feedback!

Show what you are passionate about what you love and what you are good at
Then it might help you a long way in the admission process

Well, as long as you explain what you were thinking and why you were doing so many disassociated things you will be fine.

People don’t want a laundry list, they want an understanding of what drives you. If that be experimentation with a good outcomet. That’s fine!

Tip: apstract back from the seemingly unrelated stuff to the core related attributes , use them as pillars and support them with examples.

Thanks, guys!

I’ll try my best to convey the associations I saw between the things I was doing and my motivations for doing them, as well as the rather wholesome experience I obtained as a result.

Yeah, the Asian from Cali applying to ivies is never an optimal geographic/ethnicity combination. You do the asian-like activities which doesn’t make you too unique. However some those accomplishments are good. USC is a slight reach, JHU slight reach, ivies - reaches, Rice- mid/low reach, Northwestern low/mid reach, stanford reach. How competetive is your school (what percent normally get into top schools)? Oh, and in your essay, instead of briefly talking about all of your activities, focus on one that you’re the most passionate about. That way you can delve into your feelings, fears,… that would make you more of a person than a paper.

Hi dblazer,

Our school is fairly competitive. This year we had 18 students (or so) accepted to at least one of the Ivies, but it depends on the year.

Thanks for the advice!

USC is a match. According to our school’s naviance you should be able to get into most UCs and USC. I think you have a good chance at JHU. The Ivies and Stanford are crapshoot. Perhaps you have some fighting chances at the lower Ivies like Cornell/Penn/Columbia. But Male Asian from California is very hard, too many kids with high stats. The kids from our high school that were accepted to the lower Ivies are female/Caucasian or female/Asian.

Yeah, I understand. Demography sure isn’t in my favor. I’ll try my best to stand out with my essays though!

Also, is Columbia really a “lower” Ivy? It seems to push Harvard each year for the lowest acceptance rate.

I think everything but HYP are lower Ivies. BTW, I think you have a good chance at Northwestern also.

Thanks, DrGoogle. I appreciate it!
