Chance me for JHU engineering!

I’m really interested in JHU’s undergraduate engineering program, hopefully somebody can give me an estimate for admissions. Any help is appreciated. I’m applying from out of state, I’m a senior now.

New SAT: 1490 total, 720 English / 770 Math (no writing)
ACT: 34 composite, 34 English/33 Math/34 Reading/34 Science/30 Writing
SAT Subject Tests: 690 Chemistry, 760 Math Level 2, 640 US history (probably not submitting this one)
AP Scores: 4 Chemistry, 3 Calculus AB (not too happy about this one idk if i’ll submit or if I have a choice to submit or not), 5 US History

UW GPA: 3.607
Classes: Many honors/AP classes over the years, including
Humanities (H), Bio (H), Algebra (H), Analysis/Precalc (H), Chem (H), French (H), US history (AP), Calc AB (AP), Chem (AP), French (H) different course though, English (H), Gov (AP), Statistics (AP), French (AP), Physics (AP), English (AP). In all my other classes (freshmen/sophomore year + electives) I get As and A-s, in the harder honors and APs I get anywhere between a B and an A- usually. Never received a final grade in any class lower than a B. My school does not weight gpa for AP or honors classes.

Activites/Honors:
Boy Scouts (senior patrol leader, eagle scout, eagle project)
National Honor Society (tutoring)
Debate club (secretary), awards from that
National merit semifinalist
Engineering club outside of school
Volunteered on two political campaigns, one local one state
A few miscellaneous latin and science awards (I took latin for a year but it wasnt honors so I didnt list it above)
Tennis (team & recreational)
Part time job at local store

I also have a very good (humblebrag) essay that highlights my interest in aerospace and engineering.

In conclusion yeah my GPA is a bit too low but I think my scores are competitive enough. Do my ECs make up for it? What should I emphasize in my supplemental essays? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

You GPA is a bit low for Hopkins and both your test scores are about average for Hopkins. I would say that you should submit Math 2 only, and shouldn’t really worry about your AP Exam scores. Most colleges, espcially academically rigorous schools like Hopkins, don’t really care about AP Exams. As far as ECs go, they’re pretty good, especially with the the leadership from Boy Scouts and debate club, but the only awards that really matter for Debate club are at the state and national level. Regarding class rigor, did you take most or all of the rigorous classes offered by your school? If you did, that would get you some leeway on your GPA, which is honestly the largest factor holding you back. Additionally, how good is your essay? You may think its good, but you can never be too sure.
Hopkins has a list of good essays from the class of 2020 https://apply.jhu.edu/apply/essays-that-worked/

Overall, I think that your chances are slightly to moderately below average to average, depending on factors like your essays and class rigor, recommendations, etc…
As far as admissions rates go, idk for engineering specifically, but here are some stats for the class of 2020

Hi, thanks for responding.

Yes I’ve basically been taking the most rigorous courses offered at my school. It sucks that my school doesn’t weight gpa at all for APs, but such is life. Hopefully the admissions office will notice the rigor.

Can I choose to only submit the Math 2 score? A lot of engineering schools want a math and a science subject test - is it better to submit an average Chem score or not to submit it at all? Is hopkins okay with only a math subject test for engineers?

Well, most schools really only care about the UW GPA, so the truth is that you’ll be competing against people that have taken those courses or courses that are more rigorous and have better GPAs.

It is true that they do want math and science subject tests. My advice is to take the subject tests this month or November(might be stretching it) and send whatever scores you have. Admissions really only looks at the parts of your application that will help you(aside from exceptions like GPA, which is always considered to a certain extent)
