Hi! I'm applying to Mica, SVA, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art (Pafa), RISD, NYU Studio Art, UCLA Art, and USC Art. My work is pretty much traditional fine art, so I guess keep that in mind.

GPA: 3.74 UW 4.1 W
I have 3.88 every year expect Sophomore year there were extenuating circumstances that made my GPA drop a lot but I discuss this in an additional section and my counselor also talks about it. I think most schools will overlook it.

Senior year courses: AP English, AP Euro, AP Psych, AP Biology, AP Studio Art, and AP Macroeconomics.

Your stats are very impressive and should help you get into all of those schools. I don’t know much about the California schools, but since you’re instate that should help for UCLA, right?

Ideally, yes it should help for UCLA but with the budget cuts they’d probably be more willing to accept an out of state student willing to pay full out of state tuition (50,000) rather than a resident who would need financial aid.

Would you be willing to look at my portfolio?

I know it is a wrong thing to ask at the moment
how that you got 700CR Lit 650 and 31 E, EW ACT and only 570W SAT?
how many times did you take SAT?
why do you think that W is hard to score?
is SAT is tricker than ACT?
you don’t have to tell if you don’t want to
are you Asian?
I am Asian immigrant and a parent, sort of doing self examining of myself why I can read but can’t write well.
any input appreciated.

Its been quite a while since i’ve taken the ACT/SAT’s, and the scoring is way different now, but the ACT was easier than the SAT’s, at least thats how I remember it.

You can pm me if you’d like me to look at your stuff. Your grades and scores are plenty good, especially for most private art schools; I think it will all be about your portfolio.

I got that OK but what I don’t get is SAT - W.
it was added when? 6-7 years ago? what I heard was to please this CA grandpa kingpin who wanted to ditch SAT from admission criteria, which could pretty much canned collegeboard because would be loss of hi number of customers (I mean test takers) in the state of California.
yet many schools and publications still count only math and CR in 1600 point scales. maybe it really doesn’t count much for kids would write essays to show how they do writing?
it still drag down the total score like this OP’s case if the college counts writing score, which is a shame.
CR 800 (or even 700 and up) is much harder to achieve than math 800, not that I can do it, but still, I just don’t get that if OP could score so well on CR and ACT in general, what’s wrong with SAT W?

Honestly, I don’t know why I did so poorly on the writing section. I always leave the test thinking I did great but I actually don’t! English is one of my strongest subjects, expect when it comes to the SAT. I got a 4 on the AP test, 31 on the ACT, and even a 650 on literature. This makes me come to the conclusion that I’m not the one with the problem- it’s the test! haha. The writing portion really does not test your ability to “write”. Yes, there is an essay, but it’s highly formulaic. You can pre-think a thesis and examples that pretty much connect to any prompt. On the SAT essay, I received a 10, which is a pretty solid score. And no, I’m not Asian- I’m white.

Yep, I definitely second parlsky. I’m a graduating senior from California and I’ve had portfolio reviews (one on one setting, not NPD) with a few top art schools including MICA, RISD, etc and from what I got from them, your grades are very competitive for art schools. Acceptance is really riding on your portfolio.
