I’m taking the SAT in August, I’m assuming I’ll get at least 1500. I seem to be lacking in leadership positions, but until junior year I was pretty unaware of what it takes to get into good colleges. Even though we are consistently the best public school in the state, most of the kids still go in-state. I might have a chance to be a captain on our soccer team, depending on how I do in the next few weeks.

You are out of state for all the publics, so that will make them more difficult than in-state. They probably don’t get huge numbers of applications from WV, so that could be in your favor. Still, I think you have reasonable chances. UNC has smallest out-of-state percentage, so it might be slightly tougher.

UVA and UNC claim to meet all need for out-of-state, unlike the other publics (although it may be heavy on loans), but the other state schools will probably be similar if they really want you.

I’d suggest you add some more private schools (other than just Davidson and WashU) as they may be better from an overall cost standpoint compared to the public schools.

You probably know this, but Davidson and schools like Florida and Michigan are at opposite ends of the size scale.

UMich would be a reach for most OOS students while your stat is just slightly above the admission average. Their admission rate for OOS is around or slightly below 20%.

Thanks for the responses! IzzoOne, I have visited Davidson, Florida, and Michigan and liked them all, so I don’t really have a preference whether a school is big or small.

Bump…would really like to get some more opinions

Bump

bump…

One last bump, any insights would be helpful

I think Umich would be a match school for you, but admissions may sometimes be a bit arbitrary for such a top school, that is, a number of applicants with strong applications still get turned away every year. I would say you have a good chance of getting admission, but as a OOS student, don’t expect much financial aid from Umich.

UFlorida, Davidson, William & Mary - Match
WashU - reach
UMich - waitlist unless your SAT score goes up

Good luck!

Thanks to both of you for the responses! I think UMich has slowly become my top choice so I may apply EA to increase my chances.

@umcoe16 I think you are not using the consensus definition for match school. OP’s chance would be far lower than 50% at UMich as their OOS admission rate was near 20% last year and likely lower this year. Hopefully his SAT retake will bring the score above admission average. His current score is below 1490 as UMich does not super score. The mid 50 last year was 1440-1570 although it was not accurate due to small sample size.
