Chance me for MIT and Ivies

I applied EA for MIT but I'm planning to apply to all the ivies and some other schools.

I'm feeling anxious about my MIT application so hopefully getting chanced can bring some closure, one way or another.

So heres my stuff:

School: Public School in the Midwest
Gender: Male
Race: Asian
Social Class: family was poor in 9th grade, now affluent 90k jump
Connections with Colleges: My dad worked at Cornell for a year as a researcher
Class: 1/360; our school doesn't officially rank but my councilor said that she will mention it in her recommendation
GPA Unweighted: 3.97; I got an A- in one semester of English 10 and one semester of Spanish 3. The English teacher literally hated me (and still does)
GPA Weighted: 4.52/5

SAT
Math: 790
Critical Reading: 720
Writing: 750

SAT II
Math II: 800
US History: 790
Chemistry: 740
Physics: 750; I retook physics last week, felt much better on it

I sent all of my scores.

AP:

Sophomore Year
Statistics - 5

Junior Year
US History - 5
Calculus AB - 5
Chemistry - 5
English Language and Comp - 4
Music Theory - 4 I sucked at aural skills; I have no music talent

Senior Year
Physics C
Biology
Calculus BC

I dropped out of Spanish AP because they axed Spanish 4 and it as too difficult a transition from 3 to AP

College Courses
Freshmen Math - 100s
Freshmen Writing - 100s
Computer Programming - 200s

I have taken all of the AP courses offered at my school other than foreign language and English literature and comp. I took a freshmen college English class instead because the English lit and comp. teacher was the same teacher as English 10.

Extracurriculars:

Swimming- since 5th grade for club; swam for high school only freshmen year and this year. Was on varsity freshmen year, probably will again this year; I've been swimming club every summer though

Tennis- tried a year of tennis junior year, played JV

Student Council- Sophomore Class President, Junior Class President, Overall Student Council President (senior year); elected by entire class of 360 each year; plan various school events such as homecoming, prom, etc. also plan food drives, community service for members, and fundraisers; took a lot of time and was extremely stressful; 2nd largest club in school besides national honor society which does almost nothing.

National Honor Society- member, did some volunteer work for them; it usually doesn't do much, just a formality for good students

Prom Committee President- Part of the Junior class president job; organized prom, made it happen; made 7000+ dollars of profit off one night for our class

Orchestra/Violin- been playing since 4th grade, through middle school, and high school (except for this year because of scheduling problems). Was concertmaster for high school orchestra sophomore and junior years, probably would have again this year. Our orchestra played at Carnegie Hall my sophomore year.

Science Olympiad- only started this year, will probably make the team though

Volunteering- been volunteering on and off during the school year junior year for local food bank; set up regular hours this summer;

Charity/Community Service- worked with various local and larger organizations because of student council; directed many fundraisers and planned a lot of events

Awards:

AP scholar with distinction
National Merit Scholar semi-finalist (i submitted my application for finalist, no word yet)
Scholar Athlete
Honor Roll
Physics Student of the Year

Problems I see with my stuff:

Low SAT reading score; 720 which is around the 30 percentile for some ivies

No major awards- sure i have national merit scholar and ap awards but usually everyone who applies to these schools get these awards; we don't really have many competitions made available through our school, haven't really looked into those myself

Lack of scientific research and clubs- This is particularly devastating for my MIT application; I hadn't really planned on going into science until this year so I never really planned these

I'm asian

No major life experiences, our family was mostly too poor and too busy to travel or do anything special; haven't been to a real vacation since I was 9, missed out on a lot of childhood experiences

Nothing large- I don't have anything large to set me apart, i consider myself well-rounded but only at a local level.

Well have at it. And Thank You

1)First of all, CR score of 720 is BY NO MEANS A LOW SCORE, period.
2)MIT wants smart creative people. Not necessarily “accomplished” people.
3)This MAYBE hurts your app.
4) I would like to quote whartondreamer.

  1. You will never ever be penalized for that.
6)That’s fine enough. I have seen many people get into MIT( although white) without major/large award.
That said, NEVER place all your eggs in one basket!! MIT is a reach and will be no matter what. Keep up your hopes and good luck! You have as good a chance as anyone
    Chance back pls!http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1571212-mind-commenting-competetiveness-applicant.html

thank you! will do

Honestly, you have just as strong a chance at MIT as you do other qualified applicants, so don’t worry too much. Same goes for all the Ivies (and I’d be very surprised if you didn’t get into Cornell).

Best of luck! :)

bumpity bump bump

I appreciate the quote by BestoftheBest haha. And that quote has good precedent: I’m Asian as well!

Personally I think you’re a very competitive applicant to MIT. Academically you’re very near to flawless. I think your real weakness lies in your ECs. There’s nothing substantial there or anything that connects to what you want to do. And most applicants to MIT will have pretty darn good ECs. Now it’s your job to convey who you are and what you stand for in those essays to make up for the lack of ECs. It’s a reach, but it’s attainable!

Chance me back please?
